The one on the right is for this
http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.p...d=344829&fr=150

but with a lot of improvements (switchable, defaults to safe etc.)

The second one on the left, I assume photobucket has blurred the writing too much, so I'll leave you to guess - suffice to say it was supposed to arrive today, but didn't......

Joint project with Graham (Graham T) in both cases but someone in the States is ahead of both of us on the second one.....

Building your own Rasperry Pi?

Well done John, I though the writing was too blurred....

Just a 12V power supply (ie, from car) and a serial link to the MS2 to create an in-car display (carputer).

Graham is doing all the software (I hope he doesn't mind me spilling the beans too soon as success isn't guaranted, but if it works it will be really usefull)

There is a guy on the MS2-Extra forum - in the USA so God knows how he got his RPi first - who has had some good early results.

i never made the first order on RPi's so decided to piss about with this picture frame instead to kill time lol will wait till they become easier to order or a similar product is released by someone that doesnt use a closed source broadcom chip. Interested to see what you do with it!

Good stuff Rod - I'll be watching this with interest.

I had though about running a small pc and a screen eventually with my MS to avoid having to add loads of additional gauges, but this would be a much neater solution!

It was Graham's idea (Graham T on here) and has been thought about by a few people on the MS-Extra forum including one person who actually got his delivered in the States before me and has had both TunerStudio and MegaTunix running on it.....

I'm just slightly higher up the waiting list than Graham. The incompetance of RS and Farnell over the supply chain has been quite "disappointing" (I'm being polite there :) ) - they could have chosen better.

To add insult to injury, although mine has now been shipped, they sent it second class post rather than UPS/first class like all their other orders "to keep costs down"..... so I haven't a clue when I'll actually get it.

Brett,

It finally arrived about 1.5hrs ago - sent from the UK, they just couldn't be bothered to send it fast....

But the other bits I need to finish the PCBs haven't arrived - despite being next day courier.....

I think Farnell have a death wish against me.....

WOW....

Whilst I haven't a clue what I'm doing yet, it boots its own OS in less then 3 seconds....

and then tells me I haven't a clue what I'm doing........

Great work Rod.

Ah, so this is what you've been up to! I completely forgot about Raspberry Pi, so the PCB you showed me didn't ring any bells.

I look forward to seeing how this pans out definitely; I'd rather have direct outputs from MS rather than using a Digidash or similar.

Nice work Rod.
Glad to see it works.

Are you getting the time out without the USB hub connected?

Very briefly:

I've got the debian6 OS working in an emulator (QEMU) on a ubutnu host.
I have the OS loading, TunerStudio loading to full screen mode and looking for comms ports (rxtx libraries need to be changed in the TunerStudio folders for the ARM compatible drivers)
However, I cannot get serial port pass through from the host to the VM, so I cannot test for really that TunerStudio will work definitively.
Now we have the real hardware in hand, with Rod's power/ comms PCB, we can test for real.

I have a 9" screen for testing, the only down side is that it has composite input only, so resolution could be affected.

The drivers in the debian distro do not full support the GPU at present, so graphics may not be at their best until some clever people work out how to make full use of the Rpi's capabilities.

Moving forward touch screen maybe an option, but I got the 9" screen for $55 for testing. Also, with only 256Mb RAM, shared with GPU, I'm not sure how touch screen drivers/ software would affect things.
It’s a work in progress which may or may not work - But early indications are looking good.

A display to replace all the gauges need on the dash for sub £100 is a good prospect...

The incompetance of RS and Farnell is quite spectacular - but at least I now have one that works...

It will be in the post to Graham in a couple of days (once I've tested the serial link) so he can do all the clever Linux stuff.

Now sorted, problem was using a class 10 SD card (Graham had already told me a while ago to use a class 4)....

And it can even access the internet

RS and Farnell sell them Jim, but they're both on a pre-order basis as they are selling like hot cakes, understandably so as they are only 30 quid all told (the kit, plus an SD card to put the OS on).

I'll buy one when the second revision comes out which will have the option of being bought with a case too.

I got an email towards the end of April

"we can now confirm that your Raspberry Pi will be delivered by the end of June."

Although I've got my Farnell one, I just got an email from RS saying my one with them will be 4 more weeks...

and the cheeky fuckers want £4.95 delivery - Farnell was free plus a really naff Tee-shirt thrown in :)

How far we got yesterday

Today, all the hardware is working, RS3232 interface tested by hyperterminal (I can run the RPi from XP on my desktop) and we've got TunerStudio to accept the serial drivers no problem but just can't get pass through to the MS2 just yet.....

And I made the schoolboy error of not backing up the image of my SD card before making a fundamental change and trashed it.....

Just re-loading/modifying a couple more at the moment.

I think Graham and I must have exchanged over 100 emails over the last three days trying to get this sorted.

But we will.......

It is quite addictive :)
