If I'm keeping the 8 port engine the bastard is going to behave itself, and as I haven't got ££££ to buy EFI I'll have to make my own 8 port injection system

I spoke to Turbo Dave a while back on this, but have mislaid the notes I made at the time.

I'd like suggestions on what parts to use and what cars I can salvage the bits from.

Thanks

Neil

You thinking of 18cc dish pistons and a low(ish) boost tubo conversion?

You KNOW it makes sense!!!

Tom asked me the same question the other day, and I said "no, one step at a time"

Suppose it does make sense. Bugger.... :)

It's the only sense IMO!

Your only excuse the last time was the pistons. So JE bought out some 18cc dish ones. Not sure if they did it just for you, but i suspect it was.*laughing*

Turbo makes your inlet arrangement much simpler, as you just need a simple plenum and single throttle body.
Hell, all you need is a 4" diameter piece of alloy tube 14" or so long. One end you weld a solid cap over, the other end you weld a cap with a hole. A throttle body bolts to this - eg, rover 820 turbo, comes with a throttle pot aswell.
You now cut four holes in the plenum and weld in four short pieces of alloy tube spaced for your inlet port spacing.

Now make four 'top hat' shaped pieces to bolt to the inlet port face on the head. You need to mount injector bosses in these, but if you get an inlet from a nissan silvia/bluebird turbo, these have swanky inlector mounts that you can just cut-out and Tig weld into your new manifold. They also have easy-to-fit hosetop injectors. Ugly, but cheap!

Now using four short pieces of silicon hose and eight jubilee clips, mount your manifold onto the head. Secure the clips and your inlet is complete and mounted.

Now you need an exhaust manifold - Don't arse with DIY here - just take it to a specialist, pay £300-400 and get the turbo mounted where the carb would be on an A-series... No bulkhead box to worry about.

Turbo spec? Your choice, but £100 and whatever you choose is yours from the small ads.

Intercooler - well don't bother. Your current cam isn't suited to a high-boost turbo, so leave it alone. Stick to 5-8psi and enjoy yourself.

No intercooler will also stop you winding the boost up more.

More extras? Well a turbo feed is needed - and a drain, along with an exhaust down-pipe, but that's all stuff you can sort out easilly.
MS ECU and loom / bits will run £300 tops

The way I see it - an inlet worth fitting for a nat-asp 8-port will cost getting close to what you could do a turbo conversion for (excluding the piston cost). Hell - you could install the turbo on your current CR and just retard the ignition slightly. Far from ideal in the long-term, but it'll certainly work.

As you can guess from my enthusiasm, If i had an 8-port head, i'd be using it to it's full potential...

I've already got a turbo I bought a while back from JF. The block the head is on at the moment is a 1380. I have a 1293 short engine in the garage but I would need to get new pistons for it.

I'm glad you mentioned the throttle body as after reading about the megasquirt, I was wondering about sequential injection and how I would get a trigger sensor onto the cam.

The cam I have is a 296. There's not a huge choice of cams for the 8 port but is it worth getting something a bit more tame?

wonder how much that would cost?
and would it work as well on an Forced Induction fuel injected eight port?

I don't see why not, the same principle of long exhaust timing to effectively empty the cylinder should work equally well?

Neil, lets do something with your engine and use it to its full potential.......as Dave said in another post, it is like buying a snap-on toolbox and filling it with cheapo spanners from the car boot sale.......

Neil, injection is the onlyway forward. I should be ordering some megasquitrs before the end of the year if you want one to get you started. Shouldn't be too expensive if you source all the bits second hand.

There you go - BenH, who has plenty of MSpark experience is willing to assist aswell....

If you want an 8-port cam, you'd be best looking at the cams coming out of Australia from Graham Russel. Not sure hat the Oz$ to £ exchange rate is, but the cams are getting excellent reports (8-port aswell).

Sequential injection is not needed at all. Conventional batch injection will do the job.

Right - been in touch with Ben about ordering some parts, Tom has the fabrication of the inlet covered and I need to keep plenty of notes (Tom - help!) on how it progresses as Peter is interested in featuring the build in his new magazine.

Phew!

Thanks Iain - what a pal *tongue*

I like those caramel digestives, probably a bit too much if I'm honest cos I can get through a whole packet in a couple of hours :)

I don't have a car to put the engine in just yet, so one thing suggested was to attach some box section to an old front subframe I've got so the engine can run sitting on the floor of the garage.

We'll do that, I'll bring the welder over one night/weekend.

Caramel Choc digestives are good. Tea is also good at Neils house, as long as it stays in the mugs and does not end up splattered up the wall....!!!!

When i rebuilt my first mini engine many yrs ago we test ran it on the garage floor. Even had gauges etc connected up to it !

Would be interested in seeing this plenum being built. (so we can copy it of course!!)

I've got a load of bits of box section i can donate i think. Left overs from building a new work bench. All nice clean stuff as well, some 1" ish and some about 2" i think. Cant remember!

Allthough id say two decent tree trunks to bolt to the subby would be ideal. easy to attach and weigh a fair bit. Plus nicer on the floor to damp a few vibrations

Cheers Iain. I'll drop you a line when I've made some space in the garage. It's full of VW golf and kitchen at the moment.

Just spent the whole of my lunch break reading pages on the megasquirt site

So much information to try and take in. I might have to swap things round and work at lunctime so I can spend all day reading :)

Some old pics I found for reference
