Yes it is - but not the larger (B-series based) 1800 (leyland 154 for example)... This is the real A-series based unit... In all my years of being a (sad - i know) tractor enthusiat, i'd heard of, but never seen the smaller version...

I can remember an a'series diesel we had at college, it was all plumbed up on a stand but never got the chance to see it running.

on what dangerous said, i read that all 2-stroke diesel engines have to be turbo/super charged (i guess to make the temps needed to ignite the fuel) so maybee instead of a turbo they used like a second piston to make a more compression?

it doesent look verry a-series what does it share with it dave? i dot understand lol

Dan (i have a secret love for diesel engines now)

you read wrong *smiley*

you dont have to turbo a 2 stroke diesel at all to get it to run properly.

just think on idle there would be no boost anyway and this would be when it would be hardest to ignite the diesel as less energy is in the system.

And lest we forget, diesel ignites due to high compression ratio. You can put flame to it, and all it will do is smoke, unless it's compressed.

I'd love to do a diesel conversion on a Mini! But fat chance getting a diesel motor/tranny/diff that will fit under the standard bonnet... Boohoohoo... *frown*

Don't believe so - but they do have the Turbocharged diesel Rover V8 - Project Iceberg.

Just think how cool it would have been if Perkins/Rover had managed to get that sorted out and made back in 1980! They'd have sold F'ing millions of 'em...

Another BL/AR screwup!

A 2-stroke diesel does indeed have to be blown. This because they have no inlet valves. Have a look at www.howstuffwork.com and you'll understand.

they did use these engines as small marine generaters as well i have seen a few in my time whilst at see.

we had one on a ship which ran the air compressor which started the lister blackstone main engines.

are fire engines are 2 stroke diesel engines.

they use a super charger at tick over and low revs when they reach 1500 rpm the turbo kicks and off she goes.

very powerfull for the size.

the engines are a detroit unit from turbo dave spectic land.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

Vegard, i can 100% guarantee you that a 2 stroke diesel does not have to be blown.

I have one at my house that runs fine *smiley*

Ok, I stand corrected, but I do not at all understand how it works without. Does it have valves?

ill find a cross section somewhere.

normally has a inlet port and a exhaust valve ( or was it the other way round).

the postive pressure from the super charger pushes out the exhaust on the bottom of the compression stroke so when the pistons starts to rise the exhaust valve closses and away you go.

but thats on all the 2 stroke diesel engines ive seen or worked with.

the only one i know is model diesels engines which run the same as a glow plug engine eg a carb but with out a glow plug, just uses a compression screw instead.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

Not all two-stroke diesels have a blower, some rely on the suction of the piston alone to draw in the necessary air. An air compressor can replace the blower.

The blower could be considered a very early style of super charger (a device which forces air into the cylinder).

I like nice quiet girly Minis

Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

Model engines, the ones that run on "nitro" fuel are compression ignition and NA. If I showed up with a turbo'd lump at an 1/8th national I'd quickly be sent home ...... LOL

All that has to happen in a 2-stoke diesle is that the compression produced when the piston is past the ports in the liner / block is high enough to get it going. Same as any other type of CI engine.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

I thought that the whole point of a 2 stroke was that the movement of the piston down the bore on the power stroke compressed the inlet charge in the crankcase forcing it in through the inlet port. A type of forced induction if you will. At least that's how nitro 2 strokes work.
