what you need to do is remove the old bearing in the gearbox then remove the inner race from the clutch cover
the easy way was i drilled mine 4mm then used a punch! to remove the race out

then tapped it M5 fitted 2 M5 button heads with cut short so as not to interfere with the new bearing been fitted

and stud locked these into position and then ground the heads down a little so as not to foul the fly wheel

see the pic below this shows some grub screws on the picture i used button heads M5

to fit TIMKIN roller set ONLY:- BELOW
NOTE: the timkin idler gear does not use thrust washers

right then get the idler gear by measuring equidistant between the gearbox and cover! get your measurement and then bearing fit high strength retainer into the gearbox SIDE ONLY! fit the bearing correctley as above!

leave to set overnight it should be a nice fit bearing into the clutch cover side only as the gearbox side is now FIXED!

i for got to mention the correct tapping size fro M5 is 4.2mm but been in ally i said 4mm makes a touch more thread for you which is needed!

please use say .....2mm drill for a pilot hole before you use the 4mm one

makes it more accurate *wink*

the idea came from a discussion we had and TURBO DAVE! came up with but ..............

i found button heads fastners to be just right for the job to clear the fly wheel backplate and lock up solid flat with the cover and become oil tight................i ground he heads down nearly to the btm of the hex part on them where the allen key fits! once theywere fitted and locktighted in.

a nice little trick! by turbo dave! & adapted a touch by me

hope this helps you!
i bet you have already knew ?.

I have to say i've always used the heat it up and tap it on the back trick and it works everytime. Haynes got this bit right :)

The transfer case i'm currently using still won't release the bearing when heated to 200 degrees, hence why i heat it to insert and remove the bearing.
Conversly, the 1st motion bearing on the other hand has to be inserted with bearing fit, as it's too loose for my liking!

I just have two small holes that i fill with epoxy resin - easilly removed when needed.

Forgotten more than most ever know

I put a long bolt in the bearing bore, then a large washer around the blot threads and weld the washer to the bearing race. Let it cool, fit the bolt shank to a vise, tap the cover once and out it comes.

i just used a really small screwdriver (like a jewellers one) to get one side out, then wiggled/jiggled the rest out.

I really struggled to get my last one out (i seem to struggle doing most things) in the end i welded up a grappling hook arangement and used the slide hammer to drift it out.

Good luck

timkin idler set up SC fitment

her you go nico

remove the old bearings from the gearbox case and clutch cover

now fit the bearing in the garbox and fit the cover with gasket to the gearbox

now make the gear eqadistant from the cover and gearbox so the are the same distance both sides

measure,

now remove the cover and use some strong locktight or bearing fit max strenght fit the bearing into the gearbox case with the locktight using the same distance as described above

allow to cure over night you can also fit say a m4 or m5 grubscrew into the gearbox side to stop this rotating extra if you wish!

but i found out it did not need one with the locktight

dont fit any loctight into the cover or you will never get the cover off in the future......locktight in the cover its not needed

hope this helps
