Hi All,

I am in need of some helpful advice and direction for restoring my MG metro Turbo powered Mini which i have luckily acquired back after 24 years. I sold it not quite finished, not ive got it back with it running but needing attention.

My first point of call will be full engine rebuild, she smokes a bit, seems to be burning a little oil, i live in Newbury Berkshire. I am willing to spend the money to get this done properly so would like a reputable engine builder specialist to have discussions with, questions being what can be achieved and prices etc.

I am not looking for silly power. 120-150 BHP, not sure what i can get with what i have got???

I will be keeping the car to look standard, nice paint job, larger arches and 13x7 or 8 wheels. Nice contemporary looking mini, not overly modified, no buckets seats or anything like that.

Any help and recommendation would be great!

Was the Mini always around this area even after you sold it 24 years ago?

Hi Graham. Yea I am a little while off yet.

It’s has a bit of a story, I bought the car 24 years ago and the original 850cc engine blew so my father and I decided to buy a complete metro turbo with a faulty gearbox and remove anything we can use to change into the mini, we rebuilt the engine and put in a new short ratio gearbox in bought all other bit and pieces to accommodate the turbo plant going, cut and braced the bulkhead then it stopped there. Then I turned 18 and started going out. The car sat for 10+ years in my fathers garage until we decided to get rid for someone else to finish. It was someone I knew who who pieced it together to get road worthy to sell for a profit. Ironically it was sold to someone i new fairly well who contacted me saying he has had it for 4 years with the intention to restore but never got round to it. A total of 24 years later I had an opportunity to buy it back which I jumped at the chance. It’s pretty much how me and my dad left it but up and running. But to say the least it needs engine rebuild, she is burning oil and it’s a little clunky. I drove it briefly down the road last night, it need some serious attention. But that in material, I have my first car back and will now keep forever. Just need a starting point with some helpful advice from another enthusiast. Are you fairly knowledgeable on these?

Is it to early in the year to award the “most understated question of 2021” award?

Nice to see a new project on here.
Get the engine stripped down to see what you have that’s useable, set yourself a target HP goal and build from there.

I apologise for the most understated question of 2021, it’s wasn’t my intention.

But I guess there is always a smart arse on the forums that’s his intention is to pick out a comment to make someone feel like a rookie.

There is always one that just can’t help it!

🤦‍♂️

But thanks anyway, I will just need Tobe more careful how I word my posts.

🤷‍♂️

It’s only banter mate, don’t take it to heart. Everyone is pretty sound on here.

No need to apologise it was merely banter, I apologise if it was taken the wrong way.
If you have a look at Graham’s build thread my comment will become apparent and it will emphasise my first statement of those that push boundaries and share their findings.

Thank you Shane.

I do not really see myself as Knowledgeable: More like Creative and adaptive.
There are many more people on here now and in the past with a lot more knowledge, experience and understanding than I have.

Most what I have learnt and implemented comes for reading on here – when I can actually find the right phrases or keywords to use in the search tool.
(And 2 very intelligent and definitely Knowledgeable people, again on here occasionally now, who have been extremely invaluable to me as I have worked through.)

Unfortunately, I did not build my own engine for the coupe. At the time I was building the coupe, I did not have the knowledge or the time to do the research and build engine build, so I got someone else to do it.
In hind sight that was a big mistake – Even now I really would not know where to begin without a lot of reading and question asking.

All the info is here, you just have to make the effort to find it and try to understand it…
As long as you do, most of the knowledgeable and experienced people who get on here will tend to help guide you.

@Shepster80

That said, I am only 8 or so miles up the road, so any help I can give you, then just shout!

Welcome! Congratulations on reacquiring the car. I've still got mine, although it's been through a couple of different incarnations. All the info you need is on here and all the parts are readily available. If time and space are available, strip it and assess the state of everything.

You can get body solid and coloured in separately from building the engine and box and the rest is up to you.

Good luck.
