What is the general principle of how to choose a length?

This is for my SD1; I've welded Mk2 escort bilstein coilover struts onto the rover hubs, and know I want to start out with 450lb springs.

All I can think to do is put solid pipe in there to get the ride height I know I want, and put some scales under it to get an idea of weight at the front end, plus the mcpherson angle, minus the un-sprung weight, and try to work backwards.

What I'm not sure, is how much compression is "ideal" when sat on flat ground at . 25% 33% 50%?

I’d say you would want to go for the shortest spring that will get the job done, so you stay away from the possibility of it going coil bound. Use a helper if needed to keep it on the spring platforms under full droop.

i tend to go for around 1.5 to 2" upward compression of the spring as you let it off the jack .
