And it would also delete posts from other people. That would be giving some user a rather absurd power of censoring others.

This is Alex’s call, but IMO we will happily reset your password, delete your email from your account, etc, but not going to delete posts.
This is such an unusual request, I’m almost wondering if this really is Chalkie or if some twat has stolen his laptop, phone or something else, and is now trying to screw with him.

I'm also not going to start deleting posts. Once you post on a forum, it stays on that forum, or it does on TM anyway.

Password on the account now reset.

Interesting.

Whilst the request might seem strange on a forum like this - and I would prefer not to see it happen because of the involvement of others in all the threads whatever they may be about - it does beg the question as to how far the "right to be forgotten" legislation (or more properly the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)) will apply to social media such as Facebook, etc., and extending to public access forums.

The legislation is having a field day in the courts with the likes of Google.

I wonder how long before it gets lower down the scale in terms of size of organisations.

I'm not saying I agree with it but, just like cookies there must be some seem to be acceptance.

Just my thoughts.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

That’s a good point Rod.
Maybe web forums will need a BS disclaimer to be able to join; where just like FB you sign your life away?
In an example like this, could the user in question simply have his name changed to “anon user1” or similar?

Im currently the GDPR officer for the Trust i work for and its a fucking mine field.

However, the anon user seems like a fairly simple way of dealing this. If you wish to retract some form of statement then do so yourself. I imagine it would take the admins an age to start deleting posts here there and everywhere.

IMO i would reset the users password as it could be the case they have been hacked in some way.

Just my 2 pence worth.

The boring bloke who runs this place.

We're not a business - and we don't 'use' any data so GDPR likely doesn't apply.

Even if it did - what Tom's done is perfect - The only detail we keep which may cross into GDPR is the email. We do keep your usernames (not unique to you), and a password (hashed) too, but they cannot be considered personal data. Once he's destroyed the email and password, the account doesn't contain anything personal.
