Hey guys,

I’m in the process of redesigning my steering column, having moved the front seats quite a long way back.

I can’t seem to work out what people do to have the steering column coming straight towards the driver, as the steering rack doesn’t come out in the centre of the floor.

See the attached pics. To have my steering column coming perfectly straight at me, I’d have to bridge an approx 2 inch gap between the cut-down column attached to the rack and the new piece of tube which has the steering wheel boss attached to it.

Tricky to explain, but hopefully somebody understands and knows what people tend to do here. Presuming people use two universal joints??

Thanks

You will need to add a god deal more support to the upper part of the column if it is not to flex a lot.

I did a similar thing converting from a steering box to rack and pinion (on a different car) and that was the main problem.

You will need two UJ’s and that should sort it

I used a Montego/Maestro steering column. It has the correct splines both ends and a single UJ just where it's needed.

Suzuki Swifts (the older ones) had a short section with 2 uni joints that should be about the right length. That have the same splines as the Mini.
