Does anyone else just love to just sit in your car for a good think? I used to do it in the back yard when it was raining, loved the sound of the rain on the tin top...

Just fired it up to keep the battery going through the hot summer here, too hot to drive just now, not for the engine, more the driver since I don't have ac, its 90degF even after 7pm in the summer.

Wish i have time for a dump just now, work is crazy...

but hear you, I'm 6 months behind on the mini mags...getting in to classic trucks right now, (watch this space) want a 55 F100)

Car next to the minI is my first year model Audi S5 V8, 6 speed manual, 19" wheels, was a special order here in the states, alloy and stainless trim with bang and olfsen ice...full leather. Special car in my mind. Can set off in 3rd, change into 4th at 85...

Not being funny though...the fecker takes almost as much looking after as the mini as a daily driver, leaks oil from the sump gasket (because steel sump on alloy block) and needs the coolant topped off once a month due to shity plastic parts of which I have replaced several, and every 30,000miles needs the inlet ports cleaning out due to direct injection...no wet fuel running through them...Inlet plenum off job, which means front bumper off and moving forward bulkhead into service position....about a 2 day job.

Fitted a new contemporary "Quattro" badge though that I got for my 40th ! Looks good I think??

Got it from the UK, mum brought it over.

Its a greedy bastard when it comes to the oil change also, 8.5 liters of 0w40 syn, euro spec. Temp wise have to do it every 6000. Fortunately its only 20 quid a gallon here...

Fuel wise i have to put in the top octane shell nitro otherwise it coughs and splutters and throws an engine light, had to replace / clean the injectors when I used the chervon teckron even...

Like any mini I've had....fortunately I dont mind doing the work, if i had to pay the stealership prices it would be long gone...But never topped 170mph in a mini...k&n and thats it, apparently bolt on 20" moderate tune and can see 200+ search s5 autobahn cruizer...its not fast to get there but cruizes real nice at 140 very stable and fast rack, absolutely built to fly, very stable at speed, sometime you dont even realize your doing 120, low CD and squats down nice with it.

Very well engineered from that perspective, unfortunately, design life ? Certain parts give up after the factory warranty runs out...

One particular story is that the plastic stat housing fails, 1 of the 5 external torq head bolts is almost impossible to remove without lifting up the engine...eventually got it though with needle nose mole grips, new part comes with internal torq heads so not an issue to torque up...obliviously cost saving at the plant...

Some times its the little things...

What can i say, still love the mini, its OBNOXIOUSLY LOAD and love the turbo nature for a weekend blast, but the wife got me an Audi wallet for my 40th!

I get a kick every time I pull it out, same way FOR THE S5 that I only have to have the key fob in my pocket, touch the handle, and it unlocks...that and having a start button, no key needed.

the little things in life right ?

the car is a 2007. Shudder to think what the new ones are like??

well chaps, not mini related, but thought you might like this, I decided it was time to toughen up the look of the S5...got some cracking RS5 bumpers / con vo kit from x-uk. These are RS style bumper, but fit the S5 direct, without having to widen the front and rear wings to suit.

Bumpers fit great to the body but quite a bit of standard equipment positioning mods to do
had to start with trimming back the "under bumper quad pipes...

then trial fit for clearance, since the tail pipes now exit through the rear bumper...

So glad I did this with them in primer as a posed to getting them delivered in the colour matched option.

Had to dispense with the rear steel internal bumper in the end after several attempts to re-shape..besides will save a couple of kilos!

Mini related - The poor old mini became a wee work bench during this, but rest assured, I was very gentle, I used to play hell at my mum, if she ever tried to put the washing basket on it when hanging out the washing !!

So this next pic shows rear bumper fully clipped in with ovals bolted up but back boxes clearly too low and close together, and not sprayed matt back yet either

Next job was to spread the muffers which I did but putting two long bars down each of the inner tail pipes, then loosened the tie bracket nut, and bashed the stud plate out, then cut out the end of the adjuster slot to make an open slot, then put my feet on one bar and the back of my neck on the other and pushed them apart in a kind off reverse sit up crunch which actually ovalized the inner pipes a little to match the outers (positive side effect!) and then I fitted a bigger washer after re-instating the pinch bolt. Additionally, I had to cut off the hanger pins and relocate replacements lower down on the tail pipe bracket, I actually used mini manifold studs and MG metro rocker cover bolts who's smooth shank OD fitted a treat in the hanger ID.

Net effect, lifted and centered tail pipes....now happy with the look of the rear, removed and refitted rear bumper after spraying tail pipes with heat proof matt black, rear of car instantly lowered 2 inch looks wise...and diffuser silver alloy trim painted to match the wheels and mirror covers, now onto the front...

Old front bumper pulled off, a few broken bits just fell off, clearly ready to be replaced, ready for the new RS style custom "Quattro" grill!!

Pretty much the same on and off carry on with the rear bumper, but not quite as bad, as the final fit is bolted in both the in and up directions as aposed to bolt in and then clip, so a little more control.

Had to do a few clearance checks on the drive before committing to paint though....

Pretty close with the alloy trim on, no fast exits or entries needed here !

Hope you like, comments welcome *smiley*

Next step was to black out the alloy bumper, since de-license plate barring would expose the alloy under bumper

Now ready for the final fit, don't get me wrong, I was wearing kit gloves the whole time and the procedure involved lots of big soft blankets ! (but no cod liver oil !!)

For some reason though, after spraying and baking the bumpers did seem to be a tighter fit !!? not sure if it was just because I was deliberately trying to be more gentle,

Rest assured, there was plenty of standing back and going "f**k, that looks nice !"

Need to get the big camera out and take some proper shots , this pic does not do it justice, the front intakes look really pronounced now they are in gloss black...
