The other week the mrs came home from doing an hours drive from seeing family and said i got a straight cut gearbox now like your mini!!! (Yes shes that simple!)

It didnt make any noises when i drove it few times after.. so i forgot about it UNTIL last night we were making the same journey home from the cinema.. half way home and 'weeeeeee......' theres that noise she says! High pitch noise from 5th..

Fine in every other gear and only when been in 5th for a long while.. which is why we dont hear it all the time, ive googled it and theres loads of people 'whinning' about it... but no answers!?!?! Soooo please any of you know what it could be?

Thanks in advance

Ay andy? (Edit- just got that joke)

Evolution- forgive me but where the hell is the filler for the gearbox oil? Is there a specific oil i am to top it up? Or s best completely changing?

You'll have to find the info out, usually the box oil never gets changed on VW's as the outputs are flanged and so oil never gets lost when swapping a driveshaft etc. So I would get it warm, drain what is left, refill with new.

Advice I got some time ago; before draining gearbox oil check if fill plug will undo. On some gearboxes these can be quite stuck apparently.

Dazed and Confused....

haha yea be quite the annoyance if you drop the oil and the fill plug is stuck real good

possibly pop the gear stick out fill from there? but you'll be guessing at how empty/full it is?

Well... the oil for this is hella expensive compared to most, after lots of different instructions on the net i found the inlet in the awkward place that is! Went round a mates to use his 17mm hex head socket that you need for it.. he said lets do it here.. stuck my finger in the hole n couldnt feel nowt.. it took bout half a litre til full i say about because some did get poored into my beard!

Results.. well theres no whining from the mrs or her gearbox! *tongue* and i think it sounds alot quieter too no more chattering at some points when it used to! So fingers crossed- for now- it seams fixed

Cheers guys!

Well you have done at best half a job.

The oil that was left in there before you topped it up will be fucked.

Drain the lot and refill with fresh.

Cheers guys, fully understand tom and will get done when i can.. tbh i just wanted to see if the noise would disapear before spending £50/60 on enough oil to change it completely

I'm sure you can find box oil for less than that? Check ebay out for the correct grade. A quick google suggests 75W90 @ £20.65 for 3L
