hy.

Started working on the mk1 again and found someone ( yes my ex wife) who would make the seat covers to my wishes ( might be with deadly spike's in it but risk i am willing to take)

now i seen quite some leather sofa's for free on the internet and was thinking why not get those strip the leather off and paint it to what color i like...

but i read good and bad things about it ( as always on the internet) any of you have a idea how well or how bad this will go? is it worth the effort? i would go out and buy some leather but do not find the color i like ( no not pink... actually did find that) but did found a company who said they can paint it that color so... if they can i was guessing why cant i??? only 700 euro cheaper....

spill your thoughts!!!!

I was going to go down this route originally. I also looked into leather sofas and although technically leather, it's frequently low quality. Sometimes it's one hide split into 2 or more layers then the grain is embossed back on to it. It's normally already has a plastic coating to make it durable - I don't know how well another paint on top would last. Depending on how thick it is, you'd need a heavy duty sewing machine.

In the end we went with vinyl. We bought a lot of samples to find one with the quality we wanted, but more than happy with the way it's looking so far. Certainly better than a tired sofa.

Comment about quality is very apposite as is the mention of lacquer.

I successfuly renovated leather upholstery in a 50 year old car (quality stuff) by stripping all colour and re dying. No lacquer involved there
