as some of you may know, I had a lean-off issue appear under boost a few weeks ago. I eventually got 5 minutes to have a look last night at what may be causing it and discovered one of the hoses used for the T piece trick had split at the card outlet.

Now the hose didn't actually carry any fuel as such but it had hardened significantly and looking at the cut ends of the other hoses, they are generally showing indications of cracking to the inner hose.

The hose was new probably 5 years ago, however only actually been used for 4 of those max. It was claimed to be correct grade fuel hose however came from a local factor so no real idea on quality. Given the issue found, I'm thinking I should replace it all for piece of mind so the question is, what should I use? There is simply so may options out there, I'm a bit lost on what to use. Certainly want something that is going to last a bit longer than 4 years

Northamptonshire.

I've had this issue before on classics I've worked on a few years back. Talking to friends again and they are having fuel hose cracking and leaking. So i spoke to someone local to me he makes hydraulic systems and he was saying that these days rubber isn't made the same as it use to be they use other stuff in it like if they have a batch of hose left that's not to standard they mill it back into a fine dust and stick it back in the batch they are going to make next. He was saying this over time weakens the rubber causing spliting and shrinking.

After hearing this from him personally I was going to look into braiding my fuel hoses.

SAE J30 R9 is the type to go for, from a known maker such as Goodyear or Continental. Hose is generally made from more than one type of rubber, and when I recently replaced a length with signs of cracking I split it open and the inner layer was crack-free. However there is no doubt that modern rubber is often of dubious quality, but I have yet to hear of a precise explanation for it...

On a carb application, there is a risk of petrol being in contact with almost any hoses around an inlet manifold etc.

I used to see this a lot when regualrly dealing with modified cars, must "fuel rated" hose is frankly shit and not up to the job.

I would stay away from braded personally, the rubber still degrades, and when it does the brade makes a nice seive and attomises and sprays fuel everywhere. add to that its awefull to work with, and chaffs thro paint/wiring/aluminium for fun. I would just try source some good quality fuel hose and accept paying fairly heavy for it lol

Braided fuel hose from minispares split massively and sprayed fuel everywhere under idle on the factory 998 fuel pump. Was not impressed amd that was about 3 to 4 years old also.
On the 205 i needed some emergency fuel hose for a diesel filter bypass as it was leaking, and had some fluro lined silicone handy, seems to be working perfectly although a little flimsy and kinks a little with the weight of the large generic diesel filter on it. Would definitely look into using it again for low pressure applications.

I'd recommend the Sytec fuel injection hose. its OD is significantly smaller for the same ID of other hose and nice and flexible.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Just use Gates etc. Hard to go wrong with it.

As others have said, there are some cloth overbraided fuel hoses out there ( often egay ) that are just pure and utter shite.

It's not the modern rubber that's shi-te...it's today's aggressive fuel mixtures containing ethanol that eat rubber away.

Don't buy the cheap rubbish offered by most mini vendors. You can't go very much wrong with Gates designated fuel hose, although it doesn't allow high ethanol mixes.
To be fully ethanol proof use Cohline which costs about twice as much as the Gates alternative.

I had a similar issue bot long back whilst working on the skyline i found a perished hose.. not leaking as such but looked bad
I didnt have any around in the correct size so i nipped out to the local car parts shop and bought 1m
Replaced it and thougbt nothing about it
The following week ( after zero miles) it split when i put the ignition on it pissed fuel everywhere

The pic is the 1 week old new hosing... after it split i checked iver the rest of the the pipe in the shed.. no markings at all

i always use the goodyear hose normally but had non

Not surprised it split. Using normal crap hose on EFI is just suicidal.

You MUST use proper EFI rated hose for any EFI install because of the pressures involved. Although it's almost as shocking anywhere selling fuel hose would even stock crappy stuff anymore that isnt rated for EFI pressures given it's the most common fitment these days

when you walk into an auto parts shop and ask for 1m fuel pipe ( this is the kind of place that NEEDS a number plate to look stuff up )
you just dont expect to get shit........my own fault for not checking
luckily no harm done
