hi all

Got my turbo back from being rebuilt and have fitted it back onto the engine and got the car running.

I have reset everything and got the afr gauge back reading around 14.7 off boost and when it boosts it reads around 12.3-12.8. but...

after about a mile of driving it just bogs down and looses power. the afr reads up in the 18's so it is leaning out. once the engine clears itself and stops bogging down on acceleration afr is back to as it should be until roughly another mile. it is only doing it once the engine has warmed up.

im trying to get it roughly set up to get it to my local rolling road for a proper tune up.

engine spec is 8.5:1

benross head with mg metro sized valves

t3 turbo still running standard 4 psi

forged pistons and turbo bottom end

ive put some 10w 30 in the dash pot. is this too thin and allowing the piston to come up too fast?

im also missing the heatshield from under the carb. would this be allowing the fuel in the float bowl to evaporate and starving the engine with fuel causing it to go lean for a short time and then once refilled its then alright again for a short time.

Thanks

I think you could be right about the lack of heatshield

Also try a thicker oil. I use transmission 75 90 oil.

I'll make a heat shield for it tomorrow and give it another try. I have taken it out again for another try and whilst keeping moving it doesn't give any problems and goes like a rocket. As soon as traffic got heavier and airflow was reduced was when it started playing up. It certainly sounds heat shield problem to me

check your fuel ? do you have an inline filter , could that be blocked

I never ran a heat shield and had a problem , it was only when it stopped with the evaporation

Get a heat shield on there, and if you still have issues make a solid jet holder to replace the bi-metallic standard item.

I have removed the filter and the problem is still there

Thanks turbo Phil. I'll give that ago if I have no luck with the heat shield. What gauge steel should I use for it?

Same thickness as the centre strip is as standard. 0.8mm or so iirc ?

not sure of the Hif needle/seat mechanism - but basically is it big enough to cope with flow? - ie it starves itself until it can catch up

Just because your AFR is 18 does not necessarily mean it is running weak.

The lambda sensor is an oxygen sensor so it could mean that you have incomplete combustion.
(ask me how I know -thanks Robert !)

Try a new set of plugs

Rig up a fuel pressure gauge so you can see what happens when it dies off. Could it be the old gauze on the tank strainer issue?

Made a heatsheild and got it fitted. Gave it another try over the weekend and it seems to have sorted it. Done just under 100 miles down the a12 and back roads constant driving without a hitch
