So just recently bought a Dewalt cordless grinder (bare unit) from the USA. Even with postage it was £30-40 cheaper than buying in the UK.
I was expecting to have to pay duty at some point, and lo and behold a letter from Fed-Ex has arrived today, about a week after the tool arrived.
Import duty is £11.50-odd, fair enough, I'm still ahead from UK price. However the rat bastards then have added another £12 on top.
Now I know it's not a kings ransom, and if it comes to it I'll pay up and still be £20-off better off than buying from a UK seller.
However it does piss me off that (a) I have entered no contract with fed-ex and (b) they are charging me £12 which is more than the duty © for doing as far as I can tell fuck all, bearing in mind I've already paid $25 to have it shipped to me

So the question is, can I argue it mainly out of principle, or should I just shut the fuck up and pay!!

Chill, man !

You can,t win so just try to suck it up and forget it.

I totally agree it is unfair, but now you know if you import anything else.

Fed's handling charge £12 > Royal Mail £8.

TBH, pay up, life's too short to bother arguing with the thieving parasites.

Royal mail's varies with value, it can be up to £13.50.

Here is a very old thread on the matter ( I saved it for reference but never did try it )

Cheers gents. To be honest I guess I knew I'd probably have to pay, it's just the principle as that lancer forum says, of being charged without being given the option to pay the duty yourself.
Rob just an eBay USA seller, get a load of gear posted to your hotel!!

Tom,

You have my sympathy but HMRC rules are clear on imports and it's just down to the import company - Fedex, Parcel force, DHL, whowever, what they charge for processing the fees.

Most declare them up front and legally you do have the right to pay yourself rather than accept their admin fee but they make it real difficult.

But they are simply in bed with HMRC.
That kind of revenue is so easy and it's win/win for the likes of parcelForce etc. HMRC get easy money and the couriers get easy fees.

Now try getting HMRC to do their real job and it's another story.

I have two suitcases sitting somewhere in an East Midlands airport over three weeks since I sent them by *** ( a three letter german company) from Singapore to KL on a guaranteed three day delivery and, having failed to deliver them as contracted, *** sent them around most of Asia trying to catch me up, and now that they are finally in the UK, *** want me to sign new paperwork confirming the contents are exactly as they were three weeks ago.

But the latest waybill shows the suitcases several kGs heavier than when I passed them to *** over three weeks ago and the transit records show several "dodgy" locations inbetween.

But try to get HMRC interested in something that may be seriously illegal, forget it, they don't even answer their "hotline" even though I have given them precise details of what/where I think may have happened.

People like you Tom are far easier.

rant over.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

I feel your pain....although the bulk of all my problems were from UPS. Shower of robbing bastards literally making up numbers to charge me ! Then they tried to argue that this was was not fraud !!

I'd love to know how you're expected to confirm case contents are the same....when you havent seen it for 3 weeks and have no clue what may be in it now !

Anything that involves hmrc is completely and utterly corrupt ! It goes beyond legalised extortion.

I hada "you have fees to pay" slip for a parcel, at the time i had a few things coming from the states but tracking showed them as in transit and not yet in the uk. I asked if i could pop to a depot and check if it was actually something i ordered and was told that i wouldnt get to see the parcel untill customs fees paid. So i said (in a less polite manor) kindly return it to the sender then, im not paying customs fees for some dodgy crap that probably isnt mine.

Anyways turned out it was something i had ordered, the tracking info was wrong and it was in the uk. If they had just let me look at the box or told me the sender i could have saved a tonne of hassle. Was a £15 part....
