Hi guys,

I have a little play in the shaft of my GT17 and want to make sure its spot on.

Whats the general consensus on rebuild vs replacement? I cant seem to find genuine cores forsale, but i could get something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SAAB-9-5-GT1752s...0MAAOSwfcVUCHvl for £165

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Melett-U...jAAAOSweW5U5Kjr for £170

Or, i can get my current turbo professionally rebuilt and balanced for £190+VAT.

Thoughts?

cheers,
Nick

how much play? there should be play, newer turbo's are often suprisingly baggy from new.

i've ordered the Melett core. Havent measured the play but it just rubs on the housing if you push it to one side and rotate. Not any noticeable play in and out though.

It was quite smokey on start up, and much worse since i fitted a smaller bore drain, which i'll be redoing as its clearly backing the oil up and past the seal.....

ah ok, if its touching the housing then its baggy.

its worth pulling it appart and checkinfg the shart, if it looks ok bang a rebuild kit in it as a spare.

Shameless plug, I have 2 x GT17's for sale, one with a rebuild kit *smiley*

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

i've got a rebuild kit and another even baggier core, so might have a play with that at some point but i couldnt find anywhere up here that would balance a core that they didnt build *frown*

ah,

if your just taking it appart and putting it backt together, just reorientate the wheels and nut, mark them with felt tip before they come apart.

Ive had just the rotating assy done before, some ebay place, but the turbo's still going.

Rebuilt two turbos myself and never had them balanced - both still going.
