Morning all
I've not fitted a lightweight flywheel before so am just wondering what people's opinions are on running one on a road car?

Pros: faster windup/down and slightly better engine braking.
Cons: slight loss of low-end torque.

I used to be all for it, but TBH if I could be bothered I'd go back to a full weight cast item on mine!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I ran a steel lightweight pre-verto flywheel on mine for a short while and loved the pick-up on it but ended up going to a standard verto when I fitted the RTS to save the thrusts.

There is a fair bit of discussion on the subject with many considering the standard flywheel better for turbo (road) use. Personally, if you've not already bought it, I'd spend more time on building an RTS setup.

I just found that the car pulled away easier with the heavier flywheel, engine felt smoother and generally just improved road manners.

Thanks Rob / John, fair enough - I'll stick with the standard for now then.

I imagine it would make it a bugger around town too.

If you don't mind revving it a bit harder and slipping the clutch a bit to get moving then it's not going to be an issue.

If you run a standard helical gearset too the short 1st gear will negate some of the effects.

I just found with a SC box, 3.1/3.2 FD and a light flywheel that pulling away was somewhat harder.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I have the same Brett. It's probably not a bad compromise, if I can sort my fuelling out on pull-away it will probably be much better, when last on the road I used to get a big lean-out.

I haven't noticed much difference going from a standard slightly lightened verto to the MED lightweight one.

Although compared to a lightweight pre verto setup a verto lightweight setup weighs a ton.

OK thanks for your input guys!
Decision made:
I'm going to do this build with... (Drum-roll)

The standard flywheel.

Might change it later, but seems a bit pointless for a road build.

Your engine spec will be more than capable of overwhelming even the strongest of standard Verto clutches so you ought to look into an RTS.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I just changed back to a standard fw to help the turbo spool off the start line. I agree with Steve about balancing though.
