Anybody else notice the h pattern shift in the "testing" video? Maybe just me but that definitely didn't look like his sequential mech in use

It's all a bit odd. It looked rusty in testing.

Also, if I had a rally mini, I'd rather have the standard strong rod change, than this. It just looks heavy and complicated.

A nice A-level project!

Odd in what way ?

For a DIY project it's pretty cool. This style of shifter is fairly common, although for a synchro box....value could be debated, likewise when there are only 4 gears. Not really that hard to navigate or make mistakes with.

He's clearly chosen cables for ease of operation, a direct mechanical linkage would be a better solution....only caveat with that is keeping engine/box movement in check when driving that might affect the linkage
Isolating via cables removes that concern so is a good solution.

Ikeya make some for Jap cars and are obviously prettier looking. Others are SQS Racing, KAPS, this place does one for my T56, and another company with similar goals is Mastershift.

A sequential shifter should remove all risk of hitting a wrong gear via mis-shift, and it also opens up easy flat shifting ( with suitable electronics ), especially good with a dog type box.
And this is also then easily adapted to flappy paddles via air pistons to operate the shifter.

Ikeya ( evo, uses cables )

Ikeya modified for auto/flappy paddle shifting

T56 seq shifter ( bolts to box )

Mastershift T56 ( they adapt the box linkage for cables like the mini guy has, then use actuators to move the cables. )

KAPS

I'm with wil_h - Why is this all so rusty?
Don't get me wrong; really cool and fun stuff, but some parts look like they've been underwater for a few months and other parts look new...

EDIT - read the comments; perhaps he started building it in 2012, but it sat in a damp garage, and he only finished it some time later?

It really doesnt take much for bare steel components to show some rust. And as a DIY project, really...who cares about a little rust.

It's not like he's actually trying to sell it to anyone in that condition, no doubt it would need many improvements and refinements before it could be put to sale.

Either way I think it's great to see someone doing such a thing.

Although the Aussie guy putting the CBR bike gears into a Mini box complete with sequential selector drum is more to my liking lol

I like this enginuity too... It sounds like he just did it for a project, but then clearly states it is of very limited benefit except for 2nd > 3rd... Being able to critique ones own work like that instead of bigging it up unnecessarily makes this guy a good engineer IMO. I still think he'd sell a crapton of them though if it could be lightened up a lot, and sold for under a grand (which I'm sure it could).

Most of the Jap ones retail for around £1k, so depending how fancy or refined it needs to be...it should be doable.

I think the parts that bolt to the gearbox could definitely tidy up better though.

Whilst a different car....another guy in Europe somewhere building a pneumatic system for his synchro box. Clearly a lot more complex and expensive, but still cool.
And with only 4 gears on a Mini...it should be a lot simpler.

Really with arduino's and all such things, controllers for this type of thing should be relatively easy for those who can code them ( not me lol although I'd like to )

ok, rust explained.

It is a nice project. Not a production item, but i'm sure something there is still a market for. Not that it seems to have been made with selling it in mind.
