Has anyone got a link for the decent bottles of cam lube? I'm struggling to find that real thick red shit over here.

I did lots of Pinto cams and only ever covered them in gear oil before startup without any comebacks.

This not necessarily a recommendation.

Cheers chaps, will have a look for some graphogen. Is it nice and thick?

Engine will be sitting for a few months before startup so want something that's not going to run off.

Already got a bottle of the millers build lube Joe, thought one of the sachets might be the red stuff but ended up being the same build lube.

I still found some in my engine even though it had done about 1500 miles after stripping it down for a gearbox fault!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I've used it for years, one of my dads best mates had for many years an engine machine shop and he swore by it, that was good enough for me.

He once told me a tale of a newly built engine put together with graphogen that drove 5 miles up the road before it seized, with no oil in it.

I used to use graphite lube (ex RAF) until I could no longer get hold of it.

It wasn,t anything like £25 for a tube either.

never used graphogen, but for a cam it does make a lot of sense as even that cam lube stuff will run off to an extent over time.

TBH, a load of LM on the cam is probably pretty good

Another vote for graphogen, a colleague at the company I used to work for swore by it, and he'd been building classic piston aviation engines for 30 years. I'm pretty sure he even used a 50:50 mix of graphogen and engines oil on the bores and rings!

I have never personally used it on bores/rings. I'd be worried it would hamper the rings bedding into the bores. But everywhere else its great, cam lobes and bearings, crank bearings etc.

Sorry, I was not implying that the practice should be used with the mini engine, definitely stick to oil.

Though I don't know the reasoning behind the practice, these engines are a little different. They're 9L ,5 inch bore, supercharged, air cooled, 400hp.

Torco MPZ is what your after, i build race engines for a living and this is what i use. Eapecially on cams. For the likes of main an big end bearings and cam bearings etc i use Joe Gibs Driven emgine assembly grease. Between these 2 products you can use no beter. Ive tried them all over the years and those 2 products are by far and away the best you can get.

My own personal favourite for rings amd pistons is 2 stroke oil. Some class this as weird but think about it. 2 stroke oil is the only proper oil designed to lube a pistons and rings. A secret ive kept to myself for many years but felt ir relavent to share in this case.

Nothing wrong with 2 stroke oil, after all all, some two strokes run at up to 12K rpm on a sniff of it.

Correct!

And as i say the only oil designed to propery lube a cylinder, hence why i use it.
When starting a fancy rally engine worth 18k with fancy 2 ring slipper pistons, i need protection from the first second it turns over, 2 stroke oil is the only oil that does the job.
