I assume who ever bought it realised what they had done and hid it away rather than be seen in it.

So do I oli !

When they were current I had a rental which, as you know, are the fastest cars around with astronomic rev limits. I was very surprised at how well it handled - and it had a 5 speed box.

Turboed it could be a lot of fun.

Didn't it have golf suspension on the front too?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

vw derived gearbox. I remember a magazine article a good few years ago where a guy put a turbo'd A series in his mk2 golf because the box was the same

And this one is "not" a survivor...

But hopefully on its way to a resto...

Those monty's and maestro turbos were interesting for sure. I always liked the maestro turbo, but never could figure out why... I was close to buying a monty estate that had been converted using the MGturbo drivetrain, but it had a serious lack of performance (suspect the actuator was not set correctly in hindsight) but a sierra diesel won lol... My father and a few friends had the TD montego's - now that was a fantastic daily driver in its day; I seem to recall 45mpg when driven foot to the floor and 55mpg when driven carefully.

My dad still has a montego estate!!!! He drove it for years and everyone knew him as the guy with the montego as there just werent any about!!! And everyone joked that he must have a deal with the mot guy *wink* i welded that thing so many times! It did do like a million miles to the gallon! And after what seamed a minute long turbo lag it would just boost like crazy for about 2 whole seconds! It now sits out back of his house in a field... and is becoming one with the field *frown* (i want to drag it out sometime and see how bad it is and try get it back on the road with some coilys on)

I had a montego estate for a while. Was a handy tow car and I liked it but no one else did. It made a handy mobile skip when we did up our first flat and that is the only positive thing my wife will say about it other Tha it was not brown!

My mum had a Montego estate too. I have no memories of it at all. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing?

I was driving a montego estate last year. Unfortunately a 1.6 petrol but if it had been the diesel it would have been a great car for actually using.

it was a vw gearbox and linkage with an adaptor plate to take the Austin rover engines, all be it with a series engine the 'wrong' way round carb front, dizzy at the back. the boxes had vw cast into the front of them.

All the suspension/driveshafts/hubs front and rear was based on golf mk2 stuff but a lot was re engineered, the stro was bigger and heavier than the golf.

I had 3, they were cheap and reliable, drove ok, a decent workhorse for those of us at the very bottom of the budget range, but slow, ugly rotboxes in essence.

This is who I had my original turbo parts from. If it's the same one he was a lecturer when I was at college. I'm sure I still have the block with clutch on in the shed!
