Ok chaps, I have been thinking about oil cooler pipe size,

So at the min I have some -10 hoses on there and all is working fine, but I noticed that the fitting that goes into the filter head has a 7mm max bore, now as the hose I am using has a bore size of around 14mm.

I feel it's very very over sized and just not needed... .?

So I was thinking of down sizing it to -8 11.12mm bore. Or even -6 8.73mm bore..

As I am sure the bore of the OE pipe that is used on there was around the 8mm bore ?

What are your lads thoughts on this? Any input would be great

Simon.

I have started posting on Instagram also my name on there is turbomk1golf

Nothing is impossible it just costs more and takes longer.

I've had similar thoughts. My cooler currently uses the big old school swaged braided pipes and they are too bulky and inflexible.
I think most of the kits to replace the standard metal pipe are -8 so that must give sufficient flow.

Given size of holes in a mini block, and the steel pipe that normally goes from filter to block...-10 does sound rather huge.

The oil galleries in my V8 are around 12.5mm, but in order to maintain that diameter through all fittings, I needed to use -12 hose/fittings. ( although others have used smaller hoses and dont seem to have any problems )
Your -10 hose may be around 14mm OD, or for some maybe 14mm ID, but then the metal fitting goes inside this and reduces the diameter further. SO get a fitting, measure the hole inside and work from that, not the flexible hose diameter.

IMO find the smallest hole in the OEM system, and dont use any fittings that go smaller than that. Generally the hose fitting will be the smallest part, vs the actual hose diameter itself.

But I've seen people use even -8 on much larger engines without issue, so cant see why even very long runs of -8 on an A-series wouldnt be perfectly fine.

You might even be able to risk -6 but dont think you'd be making any valid weight or cost saving by doing so.

1/2" were fine on mine

I seriously doubt it!

The flow isn't that great. Mine are all 1/2 inch push fit. The extra weight of the braid seemed unnecessary.

Thanks for all the help I think I will give the -8 a try and see how I get on. As the hoses are just big and get in the way.

I looked at the push fit hoses wil what you think of them?

I have used the local push fit for the last 12months or so. Probably 2000 miles and two castle Combe track days. No issues.

They are bloody hard to get on, you have to cut them off

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

I've also used push fit, use a jubilee clip on to make double sure, but as said its hard work getting it on and it needs cutting off again.

Push fit are a ballix to get on, and if they ever need undone, have to be cut off.

Given budget fittings and hose really arent that much more expensive, I wouldnt even bother with the push fit stuff anymore.

If you want black lighter weight hose, Torques do a black covered teflon hose now.

Means you dont need to be stuck with the horrible stainless braided hoses for teflon now.
