Ive got a dirt bike that runs on Regulated AC about 12v give or take the bike dose not have a battery from factory but i want to use one

what im trying to do is maintain the AC as its needed for CDI box, TPS etc to run the engine
i want regulated DC so i can use the 12V lead acid battery to do away with dim flickering lights at idle (its sketchy waiting for the traffic lights to change in the dark not knowing if cars will see you) and also then i can change to LED or HID headlight as well as charge my navigation unit

what ive done so far is used a full bridge rectifier and thats fine ive now got DC but its un regulated (besides the factory 2 wire AC reg pre rectifier) im getting something like 35-nearly 40v DC the full bridge rectifier seems to boost the voltage?

ive built a rectifier/regulator using this drawing
http://www.circuitstoday.com/wp-content/up...or-_circuit.jpg
problem is that the little 1A rated voltage reg IC1 7812 seems to be taking all the current flow my understanding is that IC1 7812 tells the TIP2955 to switch between ground and line to get the voltage where is should be kinder like a relay uses low current to switch high current ie thermo fan setup

not really sure whats happening or why IC1 is takeing all the current perhaps i need a larger resistor or some current limiter between the rectifier and terminal 1 on IC1 ?

as it sits IC1 has burnt up

Ebay has dc to dc converters you put dc in you trim a pot and get dc out there switch mode so there efficient you juat need to find one thatll do the current you need and input voltage you need :),

Something like that , there are smaller units but i guess u want to draw a few amps, they wont be powerfull enough to do all your gear and a headlight,

ahh yeah that seems like itld work but itld be to small 55w low beam 21w tail light what ever the indicators are lets say we have a peak load of 100w @ 12.5v would be 8A

anyways i figured it out haha

so the stock AC reg was dead thats why i was getting 10-37v AC so with a replacement factory dc reg it now makes 12-13v dc and threw the rect with capacitor for damping its putting a nice 12-13vdc to the battery

anyways now its ready for a nice bright HID head light
