Hello I'm new quite mechanically minded but only to a point! So bear with me.. I built a 1310 turbo about 4-5 years ago, original metro turbo engine, had all the head work and block professionally done, bored out etc, walked out with a £1800 bill without parts! they put the Pistons, cam etc in, I then bolted the head on and the box, and then she sat in the garage Until now (had a kid lol) recently started working on her again, got her on the Dyno yesterday and after setting her up 3 or 4 runs just about todo a bhp run and she does a piston ring? Smoke was coming of the breather pipes from the crank case, Could the rings have gone brittle from sitting over the years? Just got the engine out and head off tonight, on the bore you can see up and down marks, no scoring or damage, if I remember correctly they were ae Pistons and rings..

Also when removing the turbo the bottom elbow just about had a drop oil in it.. Is this right?

Another thing.. The actuator pipe that comes out the actuator into the little Union thing, then a pipe comes out the other side.. Where does this go? I thought it was just a breather pipe.. However the Dyno chap blocked it up?

Like i say I'm mechanically minded but limited on technically minded lol

Oil pressure was 60psi before rolling road
Compression was 180 on all before rolling road

Engine..
1310 ae Pistons and rings
+40 Pistons
Head is pretty much maxed out ( that's what the guy said )
Port and polished
Kent turbo updated cam
Lightened balanced fly wheel
Straight cut box
At the time was a recon turbo!
Braided oil feed to turbo

Just trying to give As much info as I can!

Thanks
Rich

boost level during the 'setup'?
ignition timing ?
compression ratio?
intercooler?

robert.

All compression was at 180, now it's 180 on 1,3 and 4..

No inter cooler as yet, and unsure of boost or ignition

Too much boost and/or not enough fuel and/or too much ignition advance.

Did the rolling road guy use a wideband lambda to watch fuelling? Det cans?

Oo would that have been the turbo pipe that I though was a breather pipe? UMm unsure I know he was putting more fuel into each run and it was noticeably getting better! He was watching his screen each time during the runs etx so I presume so!
I done the timing best that I could but I don't recall hin playing with the dizzy!

Add in..

He also took the ball bearing valve thing off the top of the inlet manifold and plugged it with a bolt.. Is this correct?

Well sadly it appears you have learned the hard way

Get it in bits and replace the piston, my guess is it will have broken the ring lands, you may even need to bore to +60 if it has marked the bore significantly.

After that I would seriously consider a better ignition system, specifically something that can retard the ignition timing on boost.

Compression on 2 is pretty much nothing lol!!

I thought that was the case.. But it's all a learning curve lol! (I'm sure I should be more annoyed than I am lol)

Well the bore is scratched or scored ( but can see up and down marks (like 2000 grit sandpaper kinda marking!?

Hmm something like mega jolt system?

Thanks Tom!

Also any ideas about the turbo oil return elbow being pretty much dry? I may be wrong but expected that to have oil in it!?

Doesn't 180psi sound a lot to anyone else ???

My NA engine with high CR around 10.25:1 saw about 190psi on the dial.
My turbo engine with CR of 9.0:1 should be about 150psi I think (forgot how I calculated and not tested yet).

yup i would also say

one or omre of the following .

too high compression ratio for the boost , too much ignition advance ,too lean mixture .

what rolling road was it on ?

UMm if I'm honest not a clue! I thought a rolling road was a rolling road 😂 he done all the fueling so I'd like to think that's ok! How can I lower the compression?

King Gaycharger, butt plug dealer, Sheldon Cooper and a BAC but generally a niceish fella if you dont mind a northerner

Rotherham, South Yorkshire

Piston dish and head chamber work.

Get your engine out, stripped and some pictures up.

A rolling road operator who knew what he was dealing with would not have sent you home with no compression on no.3.

Do yourself a favour and fill in your location. Then hopefully someone can point you in the right direction for the next rolling road trip.

Swansea boyo!

A rolling road is not just a rolling road! Unfortunately I've had to push my mini out of one.. a highly recommended one actually and he went in running. Because instead of admitting they didn't know what to do they carried on regardless. I travel 150odd miles to stick mine on the rollers now! Hopefully next time you have better luck :)

Where does that other bit of pipe go to from the union on the turbo? The other side goes to the actuator...

I was looking at mine today thinking the same thing....

I said something similar about Uncle Ray when he managed to blow not one, but two sets of pistons on the same engine. I got flamed.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
