Been around for a little while now as a transient response aid. Like that article makes out, it's the power involved in driving them that is the issue. A 12v system draws loads of current for the same power so the majority of OEMs are now adopting a 48V electrical system that have a step down DC/DC converter after the alternator to run the 12v vehicle electrics.
