Hi all,
Anyone suffer from melting inner cv boots off the exhaust pipe on long trips?
A few weeks back I drove the car on the freeway at 4000rpm for about 30 mins and just on boost, it was a 30 degree day and when I was under the car having a look at a few other items after the run I noticed the drivers side inner boot had come off the outer bell of the cv and had gone all soft and had melted a small hole in it I think this was from when it was parked with hot exhaust, I tried to put the boot back on but was all crappy and out of shape and would not go back on at all, I guess I need to make some sort of heat shield.

Thoughts?

Might be worth looking for a silicone one if you can't move / shield the exhaust.

Are you sure it hadn't melted and deformed after coming off the pot joint?

all good points, hard to say if it melted once the boot had come off, but why did it come off? I had the slim stainless steel type clamp on it too so it would not touch the zorst.
zorst is 3" squashed into an oval shape to clear the subframe and the pot joint, I had only just converted to pot joints from hardy spicer joints as the yokes are wearing out and its cheeper to replace the pots than the yokes and uni's etc.
I think I could make a shield that bolts to the output shaft cap, I will see if I can get some more clearance first and see how I go.

PhilR do you know anyone that does Silicone ones?

thanks guys,

I don't know of a mini specific one (I've only just found out about silicone ones) but I'm wondering whether there's a generic cut-to-size outer boot that you could use.

If the driveshaft angle is somewhat close to horizontal so the boot always drains back to the joint, it should work as expected, and because the diff is offset to the left, it would hopefully fit without fouling where it passes through the subframe (Probably couldn't get a matching one on the left drive shaft?).

It's been a while since I've had an engine in the car so can't be 100% sure !

well I have managed to get a 8mm clearance from the bell of the CV to the zorst, so I hope this will be ok now.
I hope to get time to drive it this weekend and see how it goes.
if not good I have some heat wrap on its way also, so I can always add that too.
thanks all.
