I'm looking for where to purchase welding gas for my father (Manchester area).
I did call Jimbo, and he said it's got a lot more difficult to "acquire" argon co2 mix these days.
I know my father will be frustrated with straight co2, especially as he'll be welding rusty farm stuff, so I need to find the best reccomended source of argon co2 mix. I guess let's start with how much it costs to lease and fill a bottle from air products or BOC... And what about the machine mart gas offerings?

I just cancelled my rental to BOC for the hire of argoshield… it was about £40 for the yearly lease of the bottle, approx the same to have it filled each time.

I get mine from here:

Dead easy to get to off the east lancs road.

They don't charge for rent as such, but they do keep some of your deposit when you return it depending on how long you've kept the bottle.

Hope this helps,
Ian

You can get that sort of price with teh Volkzone deal, normally it's about 3x that p[rice.

The Volkzone deal actually makes it affordable from BOC and the size Y bottle will last a long time with a MIG

Other option for very light use is the Hobbyweld.

It's around £60 up front, and refills are around £31 I think.

Bottle is about same height as BOC Size Y, much thinner but only holds about 1/6 the gas of the BOC

speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

Their prices seem good to me, about the same as what I pay from my local supplier.

Following the volkszone info Stevie posted (thanks) it looks like a good deal. For my old man, who might go six months without welding, I'm likely to either go for
http://www.sgsgases.co.uk/mig-tig-welding or the link that smackfiend posted...

Just google Volkzone deal, it's well covered on many forums.

Hobbyweld would be similar to the other ones posted for "no rental" type setup, slightly higher deposit, slightly cheaper gas thereafter.

I see they now do bigger bottles filled to higher pressures....deposit price is a bit silly though
