Just picked up a parts washer, don't know how useful it will prove but it was at a price I couldn't pass up.

Get some of the proper non flammable stuff kerosine is an obvious choice but some spatter from welding or similar could really ruin your day :(

Used to have Kerosine at the garage I was at before, mostly cleaning out old manky gearbox casings. Didnt really think of any fire implicatoins as it was in a seperate area. I guess home garage use is a little different.

I have tried the various water based ones and found them pretty poor. I managed to get hold of some Safety Kleen stuff which is much better, but I think it's just Kerosine really.

Fire risk will (hopefully) be minimal as the washer will be in the shed away from any hot works.

I use paraffin which has worked well from the point of view of cleaning but it leaves a film which generally attracts dust and needs further work as you day if your painting. I like the water based gunk stuff in the past but i'd look about for something else when it comes to changing the fluid |

Proper engine de-greaser is best, albeit not overly cheap for the quantity you need for a washer. But it should last a very long time, and will wash off pretty clean with water. 9.85 @ 145mph

I bought some GUNK engine degreaser; Although it works well, I'm convinced its just (expensive) red diesel. |

Another vote for diesel, good for cleaning out gearboxes, it just smells a bit. On 26th Jan, 2012 Tom Fenton said:

kerosene and diesel have the same flash point, if your washer has a thermostatic ram on the lid make sure it looks servicable if your going to run a flamable fluid :) turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

We started using Jizer after safety clean refused to sell us thier stuff anymore. It's a little more viscous but still works just fine. Not found anything off the shelf to beat it yet. We used to have a can of comma hyperclean which I remember as being good stuff but not sure if they changed the recipe as this was 15years ago! |

Jizer!! ![]() Correct, or any similar de-greaser, you can get them in 25litre drums, or if the washer is smaller 1 gallon drums Gunk is literally a waste of money 9.85 @ 145mph
