Hi
I have a problem that has me scratching for answers when driving through the gears at full pedal sometimes the boost gauge starts to vibrate around the zero mark and all power is lost push the clutch in and about 15 sec later everything is back to normal and boost is back up and so is the power and it will keep doing this and this gets worst as the boost gets turned up as i found out at the POD the engine does not die it still running but boost completely disappears.Has anyone here ever experienced any thing similar that could give me some ideas on what to look for
1380 T2 Turbo, Mirage Manifold, Phase 2 cam, Race head, ETC ETC, Megajolt
Many Thanks

Dodgy turbo getting jammed?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Thanks John...Yes possibility but is a brand new turbo from Turbo Technics 300 miles old but i'm using a heat blanket over the turbo exhaust housing it may be causing the waste gate to stick due to excessive heat around the housing ???

Are you running a wideband? What is happening to AFR when it dies off?
As its a pick up are you running the standard fuel tank, the pick up pipe can be an issue in these, years ago my clubman estate with a mild tune 1293 suffered with a slight kink to the pipe that attaches to the tank union. If it is dying off due to fuel as a quick test rig it up off a small jerry can strapped in the back and see how it behaves.

Hi Tom Yes i have AFR and it was reading 11.2 while it had no boost or power WHY does the boost gauge vibrate like mad when this happens..i will also hook up my fuel pressure gauge on a T piece bring it out the bonnet to see if fuel pressure disappears if pressure stays good while this is happening then its not fuel related
But fuel seems to be the common nominator here..

Could this be compressor stall ??? (I don't mean compressor surge, chuff chuff noise when you close the throttle).

If you're operating just past the surge line on the compressor map, I'd Imagine this could cause a sort of pressure vibration. I video might be useful; I can't imagine anything else would cause the gauge needle to vibrate.

If a boost pipe is kinked/ too restrictive, or your intercooler is blocked/ too restrictive, then the pressure at the turbo could be much higher than the pressure on your gauge, putting you closer to the surge line. This would also be compounded if the pressure line for your actuator is tee'd in after the restriction, causing the actuator to ramp up the boost even more.

It could well be actually, kean used to have a similar issue with a big hybrid T2 years ago.

Unless he had his foot to the floor then it would surge its tits off and keep snapping the throttle shut at part thrttle on higher boost.

Does anyone know how mush fuel is consumed on a turbo mini engine producing about 160 bhp in litres per minute

Depends how fast you're going.

You'll need a pump that supplies 1 litre per minute minimum at the rated boost.

OK..i have checked the fuel pressure and that was low only 2psi i have pushed that up to 4.5psi fuel delivery is good at 3 litres a minute
there is a misfire and found no compression on number 3 cylinder and i know its a bent exhaust valve because i have over .030 clearence and compressed air test shows air comming out from exhaust pipe... no driving till i sort that out but don't think its related as this power loss was there before the bent valve

At least you have found some issues to resolve. I would also check that the fuel pressure is rising correctly with boost, easy enough with compressed air.

I have found the problem to my power loss it was sticky exhaust valves due to not enough clearance given between the valve and the guide and it din't help that the exhaust valves were inlets machined down reducing the clearance even more there was incorrect machining by the person that did the head for me after bending a valve i replaced all exhaust valves and reamed the guides with the correct reamer and the problem has completely gone away.
