What are the best options for cam position sensing? I'm using MS2 with V3.0 board.

I've seen a few builds with a bolt in the cam timing gear and a sensor through the back of the timing plate. Is there a preferred sensor that has the right clearance - most of the ones I've seen look a bit too long?

Same question a few weeks ago

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=585970

If you go that route the stainless steel threaded one that DIYautotune sell seems easiest (but expensive).
Because it's threaded you can adjust the gap.
It is (or certainly was a couple of years ago) stocked by Farnell and RS under it's real part number.

My personal preference though remains a modified dizzy - much more accessible.

EDIT - should have added that with the V3.0 mainboard, assuming you are using the standard VR circuitry for the crank sensor, you are limited to a Hall switch or an opto switch for the second trigger. You can't use another VR sensor (like the MPI setup) unless you add a second VR circuit.

EDIT 2 - assuming this is to play with the logic level coilpack mentioned on the other thread, I too paid £40, but had no end of trouble tracking down the correct 6 pin connector. I had to buy it from Germany in the end. Usually with Bosch related items you can track back to a VW/Audi part number and just get your local VW/Audi agent to order it but I failed miserably.
If you have any better luck, let us know !
Also it has metric HT spouts so there are a limited number of HT leads that fit it.

I've used both dizzy and cam plate methods.

There are pros and cons for each option:

Dizzy is simple, although more work to make. Easily adjustable. Can be noisy (ours rattle). Takes up intercooler space.

Cam sensor easy to fit. Non adjustable if you get it wrong then it's a big job to sort. Potential for oil leaks. Quiet. Frees up dizzy hole for oil drain.

I've used the threaded hole sensor for both.

Only just seen your post Mike. Is it the same style as the one I've bought? Any chance you could measure the diameter of the hole it fits?

Thanks for your input guys. I thought a hall sensor was the one to chose for Megasquirt, but didn't know the reason. I was leaning towards a sensor in the timing plate, but now, the modded dizzy seem to be the better choice for me.

I've bought a VAG cam sensor and stripped a dizzy (Ducellier 525389A). I'm not sure how many Mini distributor types there are, but this appears to be a smaller one at 65mm outside diameter

The outside diameter of both are exactly the same and if I shim the inside edge with a strip of 0.5mm ali sheet, they fit together snugly. If I cut most of the height out of the dizzy body, it will delete all the unneeded holes and the complete unit should sit no further than 50mm from the engine. I think I can then tweak one of the advance spring retainer posts to rotate past by the sensor, giving a signal for about 10 cam degrees.

My intercooler has been delivered, so holding it up to the engine, I'm happy that I can mount it out of the way. I may still be able to get it in front of the sensor if needed, but it's not such a big concern now.

What do you think? Any problems?
Rod, do you remember where you got the 6 pin coil plug? The best I can do is buy 5 or more from Deutschland and sell the rest on?

You can do a lot with the early Lucas dizzys if you use opto.

Look at the last thread on the first page of this link http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.p...tid=562154&fr=0

EDIT - re, the Bosch connector I'l have to go back through my emails to see the company I got it from - give me a day.

Rod,

That solution is definitely the cat's meow. And it's also much more amusing than the cliché Red Bull ignition coil.

I'm sorry for your loss. My Bobby also passed away at 17 from the effects of kidney failure.
