Hello Chaps.
I have been on Turbo-Minis for a number of years and the "show Us Yours" section is by far my favorite. Some of the best build threads i have ever read are on here. There seems to be a huge amount of very skilled and talented guys on here which is a credit to the forum.
I have been reluctant to put mine on here because to be fair, it is nothing special at all but I am in need of some guidance.
There are a lot of areas of the build that I have no idea about, bearings and bushings, simple things like are my top arm spindles useable, CV joints, top arms, what can i use and what do i need to replace? Lapping in ball joints and refurbishing steering racks. It is all very new to me, I am more than happy to jump in and give it a go but it would be great if i could have some where to have another give it a quick look over and point out any faults or errors.
Right now my current hurdle is the welding. And where i am going to start my thread with.
I am a fabricator by trade, but i weld nice, clean, think, laser cut stainless steel, a far cry from rusty, rotten, thin, 48 year old crap. I am not hoping to build a show winner, or use the car as an example of my outstanding (read that as non existent) welding talent. I just want to patch the car up, as best as possible so that i can get a MOT on it and get the car out and on the road.
Thats enough words, i suppose I should show you some photos. Here is the worst of the rot that i can see.
Starting here on the passengers side of the car.

Here we have the drivers side
This section has been packed full of expanding foam by a previous owner at some point and then fillered over the top. Here ive dug most of it out.
Lower rear quarter has been repaired, badly and full of filler. Both sides are like this.
Again full of expanding foam and filler.
The boot here. Wheel wells seem shagged, lots of rot especially where it meets the quarter. show tower mounts have a few holes but seem pretty solid. The boot floor itself feels pretty solid but has had a lot of repair sections welded in.

With Bank Holiday approaching, i am tempted to set out with some panels and have a crack and see how far I can get. I have managed to get the loan of a load of tools, I already have a fair few but I have managed to borrow a spot welder, dynafile, die grinder and a plasma cutter, I have these for the whole bank holiday and I would love to make a dent in some of the work that needs doing. Obviously I have all of the other stuff required but I am hoping to make the most of the short term loan.
I have bought inner and outer sills in the hope to start here but obviously need a bit more and I am hoping perhaps some of you more veteran shell repairers can give me some help.
My rear quarter panels and heel board are shagged. I think my door step is salvageable though. I don't see much point welding good panels into crap ones so what is my best bet? My rear arches as you can see are also past it. I hear a lot of people talking about tubing rear arches, is this simply to get the back end lower to the ground? Is tubing my rear arches something that I can do at this stage or should I replace with standard? I also intend to turret my rear arches so that I can get some decent coilovers in there, again should i incorporate this job into the process?
What rear quarters are best fitting for the MK1/2?
If i was doing my quarters, heel board, inner and outer sills what would be the best way to do this, whilst taking into consideration that i also want to tub and turret the rear? I can roll the tubs for the rear arches at work and I can also have the sections made up to turret the rear, so I am not so worried about the costs of that, more so the correct time of the build to tackle it.
Thanks in advance for any help, I thought making a build thread would be better than continuous threads in the tech section.
