Crazy isn't it. That speed for 9 1/2 years kind of puts the distance involved into perspective doesn't it

Yeah was thinking the same.

Am I thinking right at that kind of distance the time would be slower? It relation to us?

Yeah they reckon time slows the faster you travel. I'm sure there is a difference even in the speed orbiting the earth.

yes time is slower on new horizon. A clock at the top of a tower runs slower than an indentical clock on the ground and is actually measurable.

What impresses me most, rather than the speed, is that the original calculations and trajectory were set 9 years ago, with no chance of altering them once on its way - and everything was moving in different orbits at different speeds all that time !!

Correct, the amount of pre planning must have been insane.

I know there were 2 strange cargos.

One was a coin used as a balance weight and the other more peculiar were the Ashes of the dude who discovered Pluto in the first place.

Space is one of those subject I tend not to think about too deeply as its a proper mind fuck

I remember seeing a programme on the Voyager programme.
Someone realised the planets alignment forecast wouldn't occur again for another 40,000 years (or something ridiculous) in 9 or 10 years time. And if they missed the launch slot in 18 months time the opportunity to pass all the planets in turn would be missed.
Cue the overtime and late nights. Turned out pretty well on that mission though.
All calcs probably done on a slide rule as well *happy*
