So for how many people does the Ed China "little tap with two hammers" method work for? I winds me up on the TV!

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

A heavy few blows with a bfh sometimes doesn't even work, or a splitter, and sometimes even with heat is a pita!

had it work a couple of time but then theres way more where ive had to cut the ball-joint and then remove other bits to retrieve the leftovers with a hammer !!!!

just as annoying when they are loose and pop out before the nylock is over the rusted threads !!!

Never been lucky enough with the 2 hammer trick but i do know people who have never owned a ball joint splitter because of it so maybe its a knack you learn

The key is to support the bit your not hitting.

I never used to have luck with the two hammer trick when I was younger, but as the years have progressed, i've had a LOT more success. I recommend always trying it, if it is a practice / knack thing, you'll never get it unless you force yourself to try it for sure.
I found that with the mini ball joints putting a little force on it with the splitters with the bolt on them, and then the two hammer whack seems to yield the best results.

But I also agree with what Dave says about practise etc. I can remember as a 17yr old spending half an hour with me and my mate hammering at a ball joint taper with no success whatsoever. All we achieved was battering everything in the vicinity with miss hits! My dad came to see what we were up to, shooed us out of the way and split the taper first hit.

I too had the same experience. Makes you either respect the superior experience, or to go all defeatist and claim that you loosened it... I seemed to always claim the latter!

ITs definately a knack thing, though it never works they way ed shows. I use a 4lb lump hammer to split tapers, one or two decent hits and they pop right out. For hard to reach tapers I have a 1.5 inch thick 1.5 foot long "punch" which gets rested on the taper and struck with a hammer, Used to use my splitters every day as could never hammer a taper, but nowadays I rarely use the splitters as hammering is much faster, the splitters come out if access to hammer is to restricted.

My dad is a time served mechanic in his past so was always awesome to the skill-less 17yr old in what he could make look easy in comparison to the efforts of my mates and I at the time. He would always leave us to struggle for a bit though before taking the glory!

It does make you realise how much you learn over the years though. If only I had the abundance of time I seemed to have when I was 17 with the knowledge and experience I have now....!

Rather amusingly i have never really had an issue splitting ball joints, usually first whack.
I have had the odd mis hap though where i missed and bent the fuck out of what ever i hit *hehe!*
I invested in a scissor type splitter since its an absolute god send
I have a fork type too but it kills the dust seal and doesnt really do much of owt else

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

Works even better on stubborn tapers, as long as you can get it into place. Also aidable with heat, and in extreme cases an impact gun

According to a swedish large machinery mechanic mate they still used the two hammer method even on rather large dumper trucks and mining equipment with balljoints the size of a tennis ball or larger . I on the other hand have broken one of these splitter things even with heat and hammering. The galling abilities of a mini are pretty impressive it seems .

That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

Splitter every time. Then if it's really stubborn, tighten it bit by bit and smack the top with a hammer so at least I know when it's going to pop.

I always use a splitter ....if nothing else it keeps a constant pressure on the joint when you want to give it a tap or a heat....

After breaking a few scissor types, and splaying the jaws of a pickle fork, I invested in a Sykes Pickavant 4-way adjustable splitter about 5 years ago - and it's probably one of the best new tools I've bought.
Never had a balljoint I couldn't split with this wound up tight and a light tap.
Best of all, if you bend or break any part of it, all four components are available as spares so the whole thing isn't scrap.
