Im trying to find out what's the best material to get some hammers made in. As snap on no longer make they're radius hammers.

We use them to dress joins in a tight radius on exhaust pipes.

Any help much appreciated

Dan

Mild steel. By the time its forged it will be hard and strong, it can even be case hardened and tempered if necessary

I seriously doubt it!

Thanks Paul, I think we're getting them milled. Would a harder material be better for making them from a block?

We would then send them to be heat treated

I think Id still go for mild steel tbh. Ive never known of a hammer that you cant dress up with a file so theyre nothing special

I seriously doubt it!

If you are going to the effort of machining them, why not make them from tool steel. Something like S-2, S7 or L6 are as good as you can get, alternatively D2 is not a bad choice.

Thanks or the info guys, i will have a look into those steel grades Dave.

Definitely want to use the best material so as not to be disappointed after they have been machined and treated and are 'soft'.
