Guys, I know many of you on here are running remote oil filters. Ive been running one for a while without problems but the car hasn't been used for about 8 months. I started it yesterday and found I was getting low oil pressure (idling at 35psi and dropping to 20 with a rev). I changed the oil even though I didn't have a new filter (stupid, I know, but was desperate) and its still the same. Just thinking about it today, a clogged filter would cause big problems in this setup since the oil is being sucked though. Im obviously going to put a new filter on (it might not be the problem at all but needs to be done anyway) but has anyone had any similar issues. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Im not sure if im clutching at straws with me filter diagnosis

Sounds like the pressure release vale might be stuck a little open. Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

the design shows a distinct lack of imagination, talk about starting off with a clean sheet of paper, then not bothering to fucking draw on it,lol On 20th Apr, 2012 Paul S said:
I'm mainly concerned about swirl in the runners caused by the tangential entry. |

Im not sure if im clutching at straws with me filter diagnosis PS The engine has seen very little action since it was built so im hoping the pump should be ok When you say remote filter and suction, you seem to be suggesting it is between the oil pickup and oil pump ? 35psi at idle is no problem ( you say fuel pressure, I assume you mean oil pressure ? ), but strange it would drop. Was any work or changes made to the car whilst it was parked up ? Can you make up a simple bypass for the filter to test ? 9.85 @ 145mph

The question is why it might be blocked. But filters are dirt cheap, try a new one and see how it goes, or just bypass the filter completely for a test.

How do you install a filter on the suction side of the pump? |

Id be interested in seeing your setup? Do you take a feed out the sump and stick it back in the gearbox at the back? |

You tap off where the blanking plate bolts to the pickup tube on the gearbox. Then at the rear of the block you need to introduce an opening into the oil feed gallery to the pump for the filtered oil to get back in. ie drill and tap a fitting into the gallery. You'd also need to then plug the gallery at either the block or box so the normal route for oil is blocked. ie the bosses just below the white circle in the pic 9.85 @ 145mph

That’s exactly it stevieturbo, you explained it better than I could. Its an autotest car, so the gearbox creates a lot of swarf and other bits when it goes bust, so the idea is to filter the oil before it gets to the pump and goes through the engine. It very common amongst autotest minis (in fact I don’t know any not running it) and works very well. Sorry, I don't have any pics with me. |
