Project Sprint Car

Back in the day - Bit of a picture diary of my mini so far....

Granny mini.

Did a fair bit of work in between, suspension upgrades, adjustable spax. Bucket seats and harnesses.

And a rebuilt engine!! haha. My clutch went and my gearbox needed rebuilding so i had it rebuilt and upgraded. Now runs with a 276 cam and MG metro head. Putting out 77bhp at the flywheel. and 88 torques.

I then came for my 1st trip to germany

Did a few more suspension modifications. Made the car faster - putting out a heathly 84 horses. :)

And then i started to put into action my long wait for 10'' wheels... With minisport alloy 7.9'' 4 pots underneath..

GOT INTERESTING IN SPRINTING....introduction to sprinting at Curborough March '13

Its a downward slide from here.....

Continuation of the story so far and some rebuild pictures!

Just before my 3rd trip to the Nurburgring -

The the morning before i left for germany.

In germany

But then on the 2nd night we were there I was reversed into by a big german BMW, in the Nurburgring carpark!! Wasn't the best start to the holiday and no laps under my belt, but damage to the wing, front panel wasnt great, and the light was smashed. Managed to get 150 euros from him - he wanted to go through insurance and I didnt. I pretty much didn't stand any chance as I was a british guy in the carpark to the 'ring (UK car insurance is not valid on the Nordschleife). Anyway I had some thought about rebuilding before I went, and thought i'd put it towards the rebuild *wink*

Driven hard!

NEXT POST IS WHEN THE REBUILD STARTS

Nice looking car, you appear to be beyond the point of no return now on the slippery slope.

After the damage sustained in Germany, and the carbon monoxide poisoning I decided that was enough.. REBUILD TIME!!

Some interior out, Cage out, Windows out, and 'other bits' lol.

Getting the engine ready for the 'out' :)

Engine out (by hand! ) We had our weetabix that morning lol

Zoom on a bit, subframe out, and alot of other stuff off. Loom out. And it looked like this -

Zoom on a bit further, and the car is being stripped down!

Some not so nice holes!! But I knew it wasn't great round the vents! :?

Then pretty much up to date in terms of the shell. On sunday I removed the rear bins and seat.. Gonna put these back in at a later date if I have problems with scrutineering etc.

Thats all in terms of the shell for now. In the next week or so the subframes shall come back from shot blasting (took ages to clean up). And the shell will be put onto the spit, in order for me to scrap all the waxoyl off the bottom of the car

After blasting.....holes galore..

Gritblasting gets rid of rust - fast! Put it this way, least i know it'll be solid..

Work on the boot floor and battery box take out -

An hours efforts this afternoon.

From this

to this

Oh and my lightweight doors -

Plenty of stuff went on behind the scenes on these photos and will be enough for now... More photos of the rebuild and painted shell soon... tomorrow maybe. lol

Really like the look of your car, seamed a nice balance of racer/tourer.. enough of a tourer to go to germany! (So jealous! I will go to the ring- 2015 fingers crossed) anyway.. hopefully it will still be a nice car to do long distance in when ya done?

Car looks cracking on track, nice work *smiley*

I notice you've cut your rear light / boot hinge panel bit a fair way up from where the heritage boot hinge repair panel finishes, are you using a donor to replace that bit of steel or have you managed to find another repair panel that fits further up the boot opening? I'm looking to do the same repair myself!

Cheers for the comments chaps.

- No the car isn't suitable for touring now...you'' see why in a few updates time.

- The panel was cut to there because we were going to use a donor cars panel but as with minis it wasn't the same and didn't fit nicely.... So I just bought a rear panel up to just below the rear window opening.. Not cheap but made a good fit.

- Started going back in 2011 with tmf BH2N. and been every year since. The tmf bit died out but now we just a bunch of good friends that go over. Went over in my daily this year.. still did a 9 and half minute lap in it lol. Managed 9.45 in the mini too.

Right.. back on with some progress.

Started getting the bad bits out and the good bits put in.

weight saving of course...-

Roof primered..

Looking a little sorry for herself...

Roll cage mounts in all MSA thickness and area size

And at this time the shell was progressing lots of cleaning of bits up...

and bits bought..

Was starting to get excited at this time.. Lots of bits and was getting to crunch time.!!!

Cheers for the info on the repair, I think I'll have to go with the same but will end up using the whole repair panel, the boot lip edge on mine is crusty in a fair few places, but is worst at the bottom.

You dont want to be picking somewhere with too many curves! The light holes is a good place as long as you keep checking boot fit.

It's a modified mg midget spit. Allows you to work inside without a huge pole and also fit wings while it's on the spit. It was sand blasted on the spit too.!

leeds/wakefield.

The rear pillar belt anchors need to be present surely as some of it is inside the wheel base.

If you were to draw a line vertically upwards from the wheel base centres this falls outside of the line. But with anything like this it's a bit grey :( I know people are competing without dash rails etc

Its not that grey really, from my measurements the up stand where the seat back joins the parcel shelf is in line with wheel centre , so anything inside this needs to be present therefor the part you have removed that adjoins the side widow is required, so as a rough guide the line you have cut the parcel shelf should be your datum, anything inside stays, and anything outside can go.

It may not happen but if you ever became super competitive in the class it only takes one arsehole to ruin your day at a meeting, and I wouldn't want it to be me,lol

I'd say you'd probably get a few mentions at events for having that cut off.

To be honest would it even get picked up once its painted? Because older minis dont have this mount anyway?

Cheers and can completely understand if I was questioned. Many other things can be deemed as modifications between wheel centres.. such as removal of dash rail and not leaving metal wings up to the point of the wheel centres. But yes I am aware what the blue book says :)
