Hi all,

we've got a scanning company coming in tomorrow for a work job. I was gonna talk to him about scanning a mini at some point. I know his day rate, which isn't as bad as you'd think, I'm hoping i might be able to talk him into a deal. To be able to help fund it I was wandering if anybody on here would be interested in buying copy's of the stl data, and maybe if people have an idea of what they might want to pay for the data, just so I can work out if it's worth doing. It would just be exterior and maybe basic interior data.

You would have a set of 3D stl files of the bodyshell/parts of the body shell to be loaded into a CAD package to allow design of parts around the shell.

Like what has been said, you'd use it for making parts, studying aero. You could also use with some other measurements to work out if engines are gonna fit etc. Ideally Id take him a bare shell and subframes which would allow you to use it for serious engineering, but ive only got a driving car to take.

I couldnt say what programs could use it, but scan data comes in as stl data. Its easily converted to obj, as the data is polygon based, but obj's are very heavy. There are plenty of other cad formats thati can do, iges, step being common ones.

Ive done a surface model of a mini before, and there are polygon models out there you can download, but they are useless to me as they're are drawn using naff drawings and photo references.

They certainly did, I have a copy of a 3D *.DXF file that is a pretty detailed. I have had the file for absolutely ages and cannot remember where it originated from, date on the file is February 2006. I have never checked any of the dimensions to see just how accurate it is.
though.

so it didnt go well today, the head honcho of the scanning company didnt come in, it was one of his employee's. Im assured by my colleagues that head honcho is a really nice guy who would more than likely be helpful, but his employee wasnt really in a position to be able to do favors.

Steve, who's your sister company? would they sell their data?

There are several full Mini models available to download on this site, with a variety of file formats if this helps anyone. I cannot vouch for the accuracy or detail however. Worth a look?

This is one I did at uni, my first cad model, opened it up recently though for this project and is nowhere near for what I need...

Yeah think that was me. Its a .DXF file. Had it at uni and now don't have a computer powerful enough to import it. I used it on solidworks.
