After buying a used engine, what would you recommend me to do first?

Rebuild it probably.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Things I would definitely replace are the oil pump, fit a Central oil pickup, hardened diff pin, relap the valves and fit new stem seals, new plugs, leads, gaskets etc

I was going to list each part above but everything pretty much covers it, so I pretty much thought of the bare minimum

As has been said on here many times in the past...(and more often than not been proved right)
...treat as though its been thrashed to within an inch of its life for 30 years with no oil in it underwater.....maybe a tad extreme but as others have found these engines seem to have had a pasting from two generations of boy racers....
*wink* not that I would do such things.....

worth a good look over imo sounds like you need a hynase what ever its called workshope book i beleave they have a good bit in there of what to check out/normal/fucked..

myself id be seeing what the crank and bigends are an at least just get fresh shells and a new oil pump check the rings and bores for marks/were lap the valves check the guides for wear and fit new seals basicly all the parts that wear under normal conditions as already said
