I dismantled three yesterday evening, two OEM APs and one aftermarket QH (not sure whether they were trying to copy AP or Valeo but it's key dimensions certainly aren't AP).

Anyway, drive straps.....

They all only have two together in the three locations and they are nowhere near as large as the pre-verto straps. In fact I would say the two together have less CSA than a single pre-verto strap.

So, as some folks add a third to a pre-verto, has anyone considered increasing the number on an RTS ???
It would require another three rivets being replaced with bolts but that's no big deal - all the rivets I drilled out yesterday were made of cheese.

EDIT - and can anyone point me to the thread where someone measured the different spring thicknesses of the AP ones (I did try searching but failed without a name).
After a stint in the dishwasher I found my eBay purchase was marked light blue and slightly thicker then the green one (which I know is definately from a 998 Metro engine). My MG Metro one is dark blue but I can't easily measure it in situ and don't want to take it apart just yet.

Light blue is turbo I think.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

The new minispares and med uprated AP clutch has a minimum of four straps on each as standard. Those are colour coded light green.edit.... Or is it dark geen. Poop i cant remember. *frown*

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I put 4 straps on mine in the end, and just made some new rivets up to replace the original ones.

Thanks all,

Four straps it shall be then, they are identical lengths on the two "AP" ones I pulled apart (54.75mm between hole centres) but the QH ones are much shorter (49.75mm) so between the two "AP"s I've got enough for four per location.

For the weight watchers,

Left to right,
Standard AP pressure plate 1.85kg
Standard AP pressure plate machined to allow button/dome bolts from behind with k-nuts on the front plate (similar to Colin's design but I think you used countersunk bolts) 1.58 kg but there is more to lose if you wanted.
QH hybrid version (neither AP or Valeo) 1.34kg as standard.

Interesting how much lighter the QH one is in standard form although I expect their steel backing plate is heavier.

Rod, you haven't got a spare set of ap centre hub bolts have you please? It's about all that's holding me back to get the engine in now :(

Thanks, James

Hi James,

Not at the moment - I'm trying to source some new ones now. I don't want to re-use the old ones because of the way they were staked over at the factory to lock them and the NOS verto I got off eBay had the wrong grade bolts in the box (8.8 instead of 10.9) so I won't use them (there were only 4 in the box anyway).

Once I've sourced new ones you're welcome to the old ones if you want to re-use them or I'll tell you where the new came from.

Best I can find on eBay is 12.9 grade (a bit OTT) and 30mm long so would need machining down.

I'm probably going to have to try and find a proper fastener place somewhere (if such places exist in Suffolk....)

Hi Rod, thanks for the heads up! Like you, I'd like new ideally too, being an important part of the engine build. There is a couple of fixings places near me I can try, it's just getting there in their working hours which is the problem. I'll see if any are open in the morning as I'm off. If I find anything suitable would you like me to get an extra set and post them to you?
