Actually it's a kdfi but to all intends and purposes it's an MS. when I switch it on it sparks two plugs. On a carburetted engine which has stopped running only shortly before this results in quite an explosion which seems undesirable. Any way to make it not do that?

This comes up time and time again on the MS-E forums.

Whilst the Miata article is technically correct as to the cause (CPU pins being high during boot up or re-flash) it simply isn't necissary to re-design the electronics - just follow the external wiring diagram correctly with respect to the fuel pump relay, main relay and coil (and injectors in most MS-E cases).
If followed correctly, the coil(s) cannot be charged until the CPU has booted and, once booted, not until the CPU instructs them to.

It may be that because you are on a carb you haven't appreciated the significance of the wiring or maybe kdfi forgot to "borrow" that part of the diagram.
