Following on from this thread http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=558587 I finally got one of the 14point7 SLC Free kits

The kit is the bottom of the photos, the LSU (top right) was bought seperately from Eastern EU.

Total cost is about £90 so far (just under £60 for the LSU and just over £30 for the controller after overseas postage).

Tommorow I will assemble it and report how well it works.

I realise most of you want something that just works out of the box without any DIY and soldering but it will be interesting to see how well this works.

Why didn't you get the sensor from 14point7? It's significantly less than £60 when you buy a controller. Or is it that shipping goes up a lot? Or was he out of sensors when you ordered?

In any case, I look forward to see the results.

Also keen to know how well this works. As I am sure Ian is!

Because the risk of hitting the customs import limits for VAT, Duty and handling charges was high.
Especially when he started shipping through the USA instead of Canada.
I also needed another SLC OEM so the value was higher anyway.

For anyone just after the SLC Free kit with an LSU it's probably worth the risk with UK Customs even with Alan's new shipping regime through the USA postal system.

EDIT

I revisited the maths again this morning whether to purchase the LSU (sensor) from Alan or source it in the EU.

I got my LSU for £57 including delivery and because it's an EU country, no UK VAT or any other charges (it's assumed to have been paid within the member state where it came from).

Buying the LSU with the SLC Free increases the cost of the "kit" by $50 and the postage by $4

$54 is currently ~£32 so a lot cheaper (£25 cheaper) than buying from the EU.

But the total package (including postage which UK Customs include include in their calculations if they stop it) is $121.75 which is ~£66.50

That is over the limit for VAT but not for duty so Customs can charge VAT (20%) which would be £13.30 and Royal Mail (or ParcelForce) would add £8 handling charge, total £21.30, which brings the £25 cheaper down to £3.30 cheaper.

So it is actually cheaper to purchase kit with the LSU even if it does get stopped by Customs.

And of course there is a chance it may not in which case it is much cheaper (although now he is shipping through the USA, in my experience it is a lot more likely to be caught than stuff I have had from the likes of Canada and Australia).

Those figures are based on an SLC Free kit only, in my case I was ordering another SLC OEM as well which, if I had included the LSU, would have pushed the total value up to a virtual guarantee of being caught at Customs and the VAT being proportionately higher.

Well, not actually tested yet but I spent about 1 1/2 hours soldering the bits together.

And, to say the least, I'm not impressed...

Basically he has screwed up the PCB design so there is a totall height mismatch between the electrolytic capacitors, the spacers for the LCD display and the multipin connector to the LCD display.

There have been comments on his forum about the capacitor height, he just said make sure they are flush with the PCB...

Well I couldn't make them any more flush apart from cutting them in half.....

There are other issues with the layout, wrong component spacing, wrong hole sizes, all making it harder to assemble, and all avoidable but the wrong heights of the parts is beyond belief.

None of this should stop it working, and a box of 3mm washers might sort the spacing out, and I wont make the connecting cables up until tommorow to see, but seriously poor quality of physical design.

the capacitors look like the could be layed down but hows the boards inter connect?
could you close that gap or does that get in the way too?

Rod,
What was the outcome of this mess? Did the controllers function? Would the solution have been as simple as using longer stand-offs? Or were there other issues? I am going to need two WBO2 controllers and this seems like it could be the answer, but not if they don't function properly.

Surely you'd solder the capacitors lying down, and not upright ?

Was there instructions ?

Although if you want a cheap wideband...£150 IS cheap lol
