Thought it was about time I started a build diary for this, as the plans have changed a couple of times since I decided to take the mini off the road, but now they are set *smiley* (he says) Hopefully keeping this thread up to date with goings-ons will enable me to get it finished!

I started rebuilding the car back in November/December 2012, when a en-bloc council garage became available to me which was closer than 200 miles away, where it was residing at the time.

Things moved gradually to begin with, and I managed to strip a fair amount off the car without needing power, and just using a head torch when it got dark. However, it got to a point when I really needed an electricity supply so a generator was bought in to help sort me out. In hindsight, this was a poor idea as the area where garage was tended to reflect sound quite well, and with it being a petrol generator, it was about as quiet as a marching parade!

I used the generator on a few occasions to get some more work done on the car, including helping me get the passenger door off and getting some welding practice in where possible, but the neighbours began complaining, so I jacked it in pretty much all together.

Roughly 14 months after making any sort of progress, I was lucky enough to be in a position to buy a house which had an important feature; an attached garage *smiley* So I snapped the place up ASAP, and got the mini moved in late April this year.

And here are a few photos of progress made since the car has been at the house:

Still plenty more to be getting on with, but the project has finally got the momentum I wanted way back in 2012. Ah well, only 2 years down the line, it'll be done as quick as a flash now i'm sure...

Finally, the engine specs:
K1100 16v turbo engine with SCCR box, SC drops and Quaife ATB
1293cc block
Cast Omega 16v pistons with a 9cc dish, although these will probably be dished out further.
Floating gudgeon pins with PTFE buttons
LT cams
TD04HL Turbo
Fully worked crank and rods from Mr Austin
BMW under crown oil jets
JKD fully floating straight cut drops
3.2 FD on a Quaife ATB
MS2 EFI for the spark and fuel management, as well as some turbo management

Target power is 200 bananas.

More details to follow as that's all I can remember off the top of my head!

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Is that a metal nurse you use to lift the engine? I have one in the garage but no battery to make it lift.

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

finish date set for project 1... march 2018

I think it's just a hoist used for lifting disabled people, so probably similar to what you describe. It has a pump handle for the hydraulic ram. It's borrowed from Nick on here *smiley*

It's from a Mk1 Impreza IIRC. The flanges on it are a nightmare though! The hot outlet almost touches the hot inlet so I'm hoping to come across an aftermarket set of manifolds I can modify.

I think the Toyota Starlet had a very similar turbo so fingers crossed I can use one of those manifold sets!

Cheers guys.

No Andy, need to learn how to weld properly first! Getting some practice in at the moment, very slowly getting better. *Yes*

Not quite what I expected to happen after being moved in for only a few weeks, but I guess it could happen to anyone... the garage flooded yesterday morning when we had some torrential rain.

We have had bad rain before now only a few weeks ago, but had no problems with water getting in to the garage due to the slope of the drive. Turns out the drains are almost full to the top with soil so the heavy rain must have washed some of it in to the escape drain causing a blockage and hence, the flood.

I didn't see any of the water in the garage, just the residual soil left on the floor, but I knew the flood was reasonably bad as I had my Makita drill charge station at the very back of the garage, and poured a couple of mugs full of water out of it; I hope it'll be OK after it dries out!

So I'm going to wait for the whole lot to dry out and see the extent of the damage, but thankfully I think nothing super expensive has been damaged.

No interesting photos as I missed the water being in the garage, just got home to a soiled floor instead...

sounds good, although your target will be smashed with that spec, I think you should see 280 with that spec

Blimey, 280 would be immense! Sounds a little out of reach for the TD04 though.

Initially I probably wont run much more than 1 bar of boost as the compression is fairly high on it (8.75:1), but if the inlet/exhaust temperatures look good then I may up it some more.

I need to dig out the compressor map for the turbo as I've lost my bookmark for it...

Shropshire.

Bad luck with the flood mate - these things are ment to test us I'm sure!

Spec for this looks mega and the shell looks better than what I stated with so you should be on to a winner.

Keep at it :)

Blimey, that is good news then, means I need less meat out of the pistons and can run the deck height much less than originally planned.

What do you think caused the gasket rings to bite?

high boost and cr is a matter of keeping hot spots under control and charge temps down as well as good spark and fuel of course

A bit more progress at the weekend and last night. Got the front end taken off in readiness for a removable fibre glass front. I'm pretty sure I wont be putting a removable steel front on due to the weight saving a fibreglass one gives, but have been back and forth over the idea for a while.

Need to spend some time cleaning up the rough edges around the inner wing stubs and the scuttle panel so that the new front can be butted up nicely to the existing steel when it comes to fitting.

I've been looking at TDK Racing and ABS Motorsport front ends so far, as I've heard good things about these two companies for quality of product and service provided. Does anyone have any first hand experience of dealing with Dave Kimberly or the guys at ABS for fibreglass products?
