IIRC something to do with bmw and racecars, something along the lines of they left the blocks out in the weather pissed on them ect and it stress relived the blocks and they were better engines.

or something like that

they also chose high mileage ex road engine blocks, as they thought, if they were going to fail, they would have already

it was said that this process introduced nitrates from the urea. Sort of a natural hardening process. Perhaps a full on nitriding process on the block was prohibited, i don't know.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Considering the amount of machining involved to finish those blocks into f1 engines I'd say it was more like they had some old blocks lying round outside in a yard and then the legend of having people piss on them was created. Any hardened surface from piss nitrate infusion or otherwise would disappear during the machine processes surely? Daft rumours like such were bound to originate about the only team on the grid to have both cars finish every race in a season.

ive heard this before, all of the above to be honest but i heard the strength came from the number of heat cycles the block had gone through

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

There was one manufacturer that had serious problems with block strength in their first season with their new WRC car, such that removing the sump on the last service of the Monte, two main bearing caps fell out. Much the same would happen throughout the season, often with DNF's. I remeber that season well.... It was at the very least entertaining for the spectator lol.

The testing program saw pallets of engines scrapped long before the end of simulated stage miles, untill they figured out how to keep the engine in one piece just long enough to finish, barely!

The second season and a larger budget and they resolved the problem simply by changing the material spec in a batch of "factory" blocks, specific for the rally program.

In motorsport you are hemmed in by the rule book, but in certain areas, they can be open to interpretation. I think Smokey Yunick was the master of that art though *hehe!*

In all honesty, I think the bit about pissing on the blocks was just propeganda to generate a psychological advantage. The 100k mile blocks I do believe though

way back in the day when I did my apprenticeship in metallugy!!! we did a case study on engine blocks and heads that were aged and much more resillient when finally machined. The rest is just horse piss or german piss...
