dialing in the power

first test bead

then into the deep end *happy*

i know its not particularly clean or the best stuff to learn on but the first thing im going to weld is exactly this material so i figured its best to learn on it

got a couple questions
the black speckles on top is that shit from the dirty ally or not enough gas
can anyone tell if its enough power or maybe a little too much

my regulator is for both co2 and argon but only give a psi out reading, would i be better off getting some sort of cfm meter too

other than that im reasonably impressed with it, any input welcome
cheers

Not clean enough, no where near. Abrasives embed into alloy giving the black shit when you weld. Use scotchbrite pads to clean back before you weld.

Scotchbrite Rolocs on a 90deg die grinder are what you want.

practicing with what i have at hand to clean up i find a fine cutting disc rather than a grinding disc to take back the cast and general crap, then a stainless wire brush and it welded without most of the black speckles

so cracking on...

dont think this turned out too bad,
there is a couple untidy bits, one where i managed to poke the tungsten with the filler rod whilst re positioning it, other than that i have not had to adjust or regrind the tip so im happy :)

packing the tig up now before i find something else to weld *happy*

Welds don't look too bad for a first attempt, especially as cast is generally dirty to weld than clean ally.

It's a bit late now, but welding such thick sections of ally, you are best off chamfering the edges to half the wall thickness. that way you can get deep penetration in the weld, and if you wish to clean up the welds flush with the surface, you'll have plenty of metal to work with beneath the surface.

somthing I found, was use a stainles wirebrush to clean before welding, and ONLY use it for ally welding.

for cast stuff i always end up with the cleaning set tu full ( if you have that adjustment.

also preflow and post flow, especially post flow, keep the argon going for a bit to stop the oxidization

all chamfered where i could on the finished manifold, the flange is slightly wider than the runners so on the inners its chamfered and on the outer edges its built up weld, it used 7m of filler rod *happy*

I've got a small job to be done on really thing aluminium, and didn't want to fuck up the part at the first strike, I went with what I already know. I was well impressed with the results of the test piece *happy*

oooh lots of knbs on that!

AC Balance changes the amount of weld cleaning, 20% will be hotter, but 50% will have more cleaning ( current flowing backwards and pushing shit off the weld)
