hi all, new to the forum, but have been on tmf for years.

im looking to turbo my 998 metro, the engine is in good shape with less than 40k on the clock, so i thought why not keep it in and make it a little more fun! im not after ultimate power, just a little more poke to make it keep up with modern traffic a little easier.

the car is used almost daily, so it needs to be reliable and ideally with the minimal amount of downtime whilst doing the conversion. i want to keep the standard cam, and run relatively low boost

so i have a few questions, some of which i have hunted for answer to on here, but im not sure if the answers i found are really applicable to what im looking for.

so.....
what turbo is going to be best for drivability, on a 998, looking at low boost levels etc?

i know its not ideal, but i have a few 998 standard heads laying around, can i modify the chambers to get the c.r. down?

im fine with welding/fabricating so i quite fancy making my own exhaust manifold, would i be best making a remote style manifold with the turbo over by the clutch, or can i get away with a very simple design with short pipes?

im sure i read that a hif carb can be modifed to be used with a turbo, but is there a guide on here to whats involved?

sorry to sound like a total idiot, but other than having driven a couple of turbo'd minis that we had for sale where i used to work a few years ago, i have literally NO experience with them at all!

I'd go 12G295 head and use a small R5 sized T2 (or modern equvalent turbo), metro turbo fuel pump with return tee-d into low pressure side, and get a standard turbo carb (or convert yours as you say)

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

thanks for that link John, i have seen that same roundup on here, just not on that page specifically.

when you say renault 5 T2, or modern equivalent, is there a part number or a specific car i should look for? someone mentioned a "GT" something or other? i cant recal the two number that followed it though?

If you're making your own manifold your turbo choices are limited by just suitability and size, so it may be worth shopping around as to what will suit you rather than using the common T2.

Parts wise it depends on your budget. the 12G295 is a good head but people (have a search for Dan187's threads) have had good results with the completely stock 998 engine, with lower CR with a T2 on mirage manifolds.

For starters, have a read through Turbo Phil's site, and I also have this Index link saved:

Which under carb mods has how to convert the NA carb I believe

Edit- remembered who it was that ran the standard 998

I think you could get away with a GT1544 as well, will spool quicker than the GT1548 at the expense of maximum power, but should be a decent size for a quick spooling, low boost 998 and will be easier to find
