Hi all, just dropping in as I have just messed around with my website. I think all the pics I posted in the Forum are still there but if any are missing just PM me and I'll fix it.

I have been tinkering since my last visit with an................

MGB -- there I said it.

You can all bugger off.. Its fine for poodling around in the summer here!

My Mini is in California now, last I heard the new owner was enjoying it so much he stripped first gear! He seemed OK with that and said it was great fun doing it. He was looking at an SC gearbox but not heard from him since.

Good luck all

I'm not turbo Tel anymore I'm boring Tel!

No turbo or supercharger its just a bog standard 1967 MGB, I went for that year as I think its the best, esp here in the USA as they messed up the dash in 1968. It also has the three synchro box that gives a satisfying crunch if you forget.
The worst Job was re installing the Windscreen, I only found out after 4-5 hours of struggling and cracking it that I had an over sized seal. There is also a screen to body seal at the bottom that has to be fed into a slot with a lot of "personal lubricant" to assist slipping (I got a funny look at the Chemists when I bought that lot) and It was hell on my hands, I think they hurt for weeks after, -- from sliding the seal-- I almost forgot how all your minds work there!

Its almost done but the pics are not up to date here as its been snowing a bit! (like 15 snowstorms and 58 inches total) so I have not got it out much. I have put the chrome strips on and repainted the Rostyles since these pics. I did chance the salt this weekend and I must say that it drives pretty modern for an almost 50 year old car.. no power, but thats Ok, maybe the wife will stop whining all the time like she used to in the Mini.

I just need to sort out the top and tonnaeu and maybe address the slight bachelor lean it has.

What I did do recently was extend my garage, its still a single but is now 36 ft long, so I can easily get 2 cars in that are not Mini's. I even have a window and door back there so its not like a bat cave.

I may well go to the Taste of Britain this year Colas, Probably the Brit car shows at West Chester and Delaware in May as well.

.. jeeze -- forgotton how to post pics!! I had to go look there..

I'll post a couple more of the finished car when I get some.

Bump!

Hi guys, Just dropped by again and wanted to say how much I miss this forum.. I'm into a Triumph Stag now and it can get a bit heavy on the forum there, so came here for a refresher. Can't believe its almost 9 years since I polished a needle!

Yes I took on the ultimate challenge for my impending retirement, A Stag with original engine - or not? It actually had no engine, just a block. So I just had to go buy another Stag. That original block has bitten my ass already. It was actually the original block so I wanted to use it if possible so off to the machine shop to have it checked.. If only I had done a quick check myself.

Problem was he didn't fully check it and after it was decked and rebored I realised (when tightening down any one main it locked the crank) that most of the main caps were 10 thou off sideways. Quite a lot and pricy to correct. so I dumped it and am awaiting the word on the other one.. Wish me luck, Ill always need it doing a Stag..

And No, its not going to be Turbocharged.. are you Crazy?? But I am going for an electric water pump and Radiator fan to eliminate that iffy pump in the block. I have already done the gearbox, converted to Overdrive and am polishing and painting bits as I go but will not start on the body until I retire early next year.

Here you go.. What a beauty!

Nice. I'm selling up this year and giving serious consideration to a stag. I like the idea of an engine and box swap for something more modern.

Stag with a nice LS engine and six speed would be a great all round car IMO

I dont get the guys who want to put strange and wonderful engines in the Staaaaag.

Its got the V8 burble what else could you want?

Wheres your sense of adventure?? The Triumph V8 was a wonder (errr..when it worked) who wants a boring engine that never goes wrong?? Thats no achievement. The basic problem was crap 70's BL build (e.g. not getting the sand out of the block castings and iffy crank hardening) water pump up so high in the engine that any loss of coolant dries it out and single timing chains that only last 25K. Barring the timing chains most of the problems can be sorted nowadays, cooling wise I'm going the electric water pump route but a simple header tank can help a lot.

But yes, I was flicking through a catalog of US "Crate" engines the other day and they are amazingly cheap, but I was not tempted -- I'm going to be retired for a long time I hope, so need the challenge.

Dave - yes and yes. The new one is just a quick one to help line my pocket.

Tel - fuel injection, 290bhp and a modern auto box. What's not to want?

Quite right. I always think that changing an engine changes the whole nature of the car, I'd have no interest in a Staaaaggg with a Rover V8 for instance.

The V8 sound does nothing for me though, A straight 5 is my favorite sound (Group B Audi through the forests takes me back), but a screaming 4-pot is always great.

I know, but I'm with Wil, thats not a REAL Stag and I would not like it.. May as well buy a modern car, It will be even better!

Even though I turbo charged the Mini, It was at least a Mini engine, I had no wish to put e.g a Honda in it.

Everyone to their own.

If you are going to buy a 70's car accept it for what it is, embrace it, love it, hate it, break down etc..
If you want a reliable 300bhp V8 Lexus buy one of them.
