well a couple of weekend ago , my good friend Jason ,with the caterham ,broke down near my house in a 1966 austin gipsy.

looks a bit like this ,

grabbing my trusty 2 inch webbing strap ,and my astra turbo, I towed him the 30 miles home ,in the bucketing rain ,with lots of frantic braking from his 4 drums at the roundabouts etc.

this weekend we got around to trying to find out what was wrong ,symtoms were an ak47 death rattle and no power, I thought big end , he hoped head gasket ,its an old bmc 2.2 diesel engine ,same as in a taxi or a narrowboat .

we hoicked the head off with a big crowbar ,and all looked ok with the head gasket ,all the pistons were there , and then j noticed an odd phenomenon...the head of no4 piston ,would rotate 360 degrees !
this didn't seem quite right ?

with a pair of pliers he lifted the top of the piston straight out of the bore , oh we laughed .

dropped the sump off and big end cap ,and found this ..

hmmm, that will be the noise then , big end was worn 1.5mm on the journal ,and the shells were thin husks of sheet steel .

then I turned the head over and found this ...

something tells me that isn't the normal sort of inlet port design .more laughing ensued.

oh fun .

funny thing was it held up 45 mph for 25 miles like that ,then 2 miles past my house it died ,...... we reckon that's when the head of the piston came off .

Is that a solid axle gippo?
When LR got word of the independant front suspension of the "new Austin", they made several mockups of series 1s with independant in case the gipsy suspension proved superior. In the end, the Austin went to the solid axles...
As technologically superior as they were to the landrover on paper, I wonder if austin ever made real money on them given the life and all the changes they made through production.

That said, I still can't get over the nut in the intake!!!

I guess there is a good spares line if the engine is from a taxi?

Good effort!

I like the pistons, with the extra ring at the bottom, I thought they stopped using that design of pistons in the 40s?
