just starting to build up a shell , im aiming for a sub 500 car with a multipoint cds cage, roughly 45kg

im going to cut out the rear bench, bins etc and flat floor it go weight watchers on the subbys , alloy calipers, glass front end, light doors, glass bootlid no sound deadening, no heater, kirkey seat, poly windows, do the lads on here think that will get me down to 500 or will i need to start remaking parts in ally etc ?

cheers

That wont get you down to 500, you need to do more

I seriously doubt it!

KAD alloy rear arms & alloy drums will need to be done! I have just been a cheap skate and bought the standard "S" spaced drum and i already wish i had paid extra for the alloy ones.

You will need to do lots more mate, have a look at my page and see how much work I have done to get down to 600kg

Like 90% of my fixings are Ti

using a rear beam will lose a fair bit of weight aswell, most of the running gear are the heavier bits top arms weight quite abit

a alloy cylinder head would be lighter than the cast iron one aswell

Then make it remote control so you don't have to sit in it.

Curb weight is 670kg isn't it ? What do you guys think is the best bang for your buck after you have done all the easy bits like just removing what you don't use ?

C/F roof, alloy or C/F boot floor panel. Seeing as you're planning to fit a cage you could cut out the rear backrest and replace with a C/F or alloy panel as well.

Life is always a matter of opinion and quite frankly, no ones opinion really matters.

yeah, im thinking cos i have the cage if i tie it into the subbys then i can cut most stuff out without worrying about it flopping about

i was going to juat use 25 mill box and ally sheet for the heel board back hopfuly that will save me a bit.

im on 7% body fat now so i cant diet any more aha , theres only 67 kg of me anyway , well 64 when im at fighting weight lol

One thing to think about is that apparently a bare shell weighs only 130kg or so

And given that you want to save 170kg, you will have to look at some serious non-shell related savings.

yeah and i have to offset a quite involved cds cage :/ i toted up some stuff on my to do list, and further suggestions would be aperciated,

sound deadening 9kg
fg front 15kg
fg boot 3kg
rear seat and lip bins etc, about 7kg ?
rear seatbelt mounts 1kg
lower dash 2kg
poly windows, 18 kg apparently
the foam from the rear seats 5kg
replacing front seats with kirkey 10kg
minifins 5kg
aloy 4 pots, offset by the fact the disks are vented, so only a few grams there
maby 3kg out of each subby
heater removal 5kg
lcb manifold 3-4kg ?

engine is 151 kg apparently so thats quite a big lump out of my 500 that wont get any lighter

Yes you can drop lots out of the eng, start looking at all the fixings and then all the stuff you bolt to it.

i suppose lightweight altinater and starter, and grinding the webbing off, what else would you suggest ? the manifolds will save me quite a bit over the cast ones too

Well all the studs can be made in Ti also all the bolts can be swapped for Ti/alloy.

Just have a look here for some ideas

think iv managed to loose a reasonable amount out of the bare shell, 20 kg out already

so far iv chopped
rear seat lip and bins
lower dash rail
all sound deadening
rear valence

also the bolt on bits i have some fg
doors with polycarb windows (about a 25-30kg saving)
polycarb side and rear windows will go in too
boot 3-4 kg ?

front end 10 kg ?
also buying a fg roof

about 90 kg saving from that lot i recon , or is that a bit ambitious ?
and there will be no heater and a kirkey , that has to be another 10kg there
so only 70 kg left to loose, and i havent thought about the subframes or drilling holes in anything yet
