The first time I read about the use of electric water pumps is already several years ago when Bill Sollis published his book on Mini race preparation (must be end of the 90's).

Dont believe everything you read. You will gain nowhere near 10hp, maybe 2-3 tops I seriously doubt it! |

Good luck with that one. I have a freid with a stage rally car and the bmw head conversion. He plumbed the electric cooling system exactly as you have with the controllet ad well. He could barely keep the engine cool anything more than idle. He went back to clockwork on the same engine and its done several flat out rallys. On 26th Oct, 2004 TurboDave16v said:
Is it A-Series only? I think it should be... So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'... On 26th Oct, 2004 Tom Fenton said:

I did this years ago when I had a front mounted rad, though I never dyno'd the engine it made a noticeable difference to engine response.

I'm running the same pump, never needed the controller though as its fine running at full flow with a stat in line.

you say this will do away with the thermostat i think u still need that restriction to build pressure in the engine as water boils at higher temps if under pressure.. just saying id use a blanking sleeve or cut up thermo

why, does the fan save 5bhp? Inertia forces dude Drag caused by fan spinning will have Weight & Air force causing drag. Water impella causing drag with the water. removing all that will take away the drag. |

When water gets hot in a sealed space, pressure will be created. You may lose some water pressure within the engine itself, but shouldnt be a big deal. I tried a Davies Craig pump about 15 years ago....it was a piece of shit. It would put me off ever using an electric pump on an engine. mechanical pumps are cheap/free, they are very reliable, and they work. Doesnt really make a lot of sense to fix something that isnt broken. 9.85 @ 145mph

A friend of mine went from mechanical to electric water pump on his 1242FIRE and got 2 hp. But the big advantage is to be able to run the pump and fan to keep it cool in the pit lane :) www.shag.no |

Removing the fan makes perfect sense. It is not needed most of the time so it is taking up power that could be used elsewhere. The water pump makes no sense, to me. To pump the water around takes energy and that will not change. Just because it is the alternator making the energy does not save any energy. If the elctric pump is more efficient there may be a gain, but minimal.

Years ago I converted a 1293 NA mini to a front mounted rad with electric fan and ditched the mech fan. Like Phil says I did not rollling road it, but it made a noticeable difference to it.
