OK, long time.

I lost interest over a year ago apart from playing with electronic bits but never got it MOT'd

About 2 weeks ago when taking my daily (Mondeo crap) for its MOT to the local garage, the owner and MOT tester both asked me why I hadn't yet brought the Mini in (they had both seen it in my garage nearly finished about 18 months ago).

So, re-motivated I finished the hydraulics (brake/clutch) so I could run it up/down my drive.

The siamese code injection has been fine since I installed it but only ever run under no load so it was with a little trepidation that I ran it down my drive after coming back from the Mondeo's MOT.

I have just under 40m to play on, and it's a shingle drive, so my data is somewhat limited.

Best (so far) below

AFRs (second graph down, inners, outers and after turbo) are suprisingly close despite the fact I didn't run offset VE tables for this test but just relied on offset injection timing and fixed offset and not tables offset.

After the initial wheelspin (at 1/4 thottle, you can see it in the msl graph) I got 15MPH to 28MPH (based on engine RPM and gear ratios) in just under 1.5secs at 0.67 bar boost so it bodes well for my initial target of 0-60 in less than 6 secs for the UN-staged injection setup.
Staged injection is yet to follow, electronics is all built, just not the manifold yet.

I,m so pleased this has re-surfaced.

Indeed. Good effort.

Fab, look forward to the development. As i mentioned to Paul the megalog viewer premium upgrade is well worth it to get the most out of the data logs. Using the 3D plotting and calculated fields

I can't comment on the figures but i'm glad you are re-motivated. Sometimes we need a break from things

This still is so far above my knowledge it's hilarious.

Great you're back at it, though.

Thanks for the comments, you have my local garage to blame for re-motivating me.

As for what's left to do, unfortunately, quite a lot.

(hence why I didn't include a photo of the car itself, just the damage it did to my driveway).

Mainly a full respray (long and tedious preparation to do it well) as all the new metal is just in primer. and then the wiring. None of the standard wiring is connected apart from the ignition switch and alternator and for the EFi setup, only the ECU wiring and relay bank is finished, all the widebands, IOx for additional inputs and datalogging are all just on temporary cabling. Wiring is as boring and tedious as respraying....

But the first (next) job is to install this lot (which includes more wiring and the engine back out)....

Note the wrong length studs on the rear hubs, I just found a pair of good hubs in my boxes of many parts and didn't think so I now have a bag of 8 long ones to fit...

The output spinning up the rear hub with an electric drill.

All goes into this.

Revised from the first version (I did say I'd been playing with electronics over the last year instead of finishing the mechanical stuff) to now include the ability to switch on/off from a simple push button on the dash (or wherever) but with a timer/flipflop so it allways reverts to "on" when the engine is started irrespective of the setting when the engine was stopped. That was Graham's idea and circuit, we've built and tested one each (Graham is using different toothed wheels but we are both using near identical minature Hall switches) and they appear to work fine, but bench testing with a scope only so far.

(EDIT - typo)

Rod where did you get the wheel sensor equipment?

Neil, the sensor rings are VW/Audi part number 1J0 614 149

They are for the rear hubs of a lot of VW/Audi ABS systems (antilock brakes rather than the ABS (plastic) I mounted them on).

The miniature Hall switches are a standard Digikey part (Graham) and old stock being sold off by Farnell in my case (hence our slight difference). They are sold to second party manufactures to encase them, not really intended to be used as they are, not a problem in the rear drums but I'll bury them in araldite on the front pot joints. If you want the part number I can find it (may take a couple of days, just recovering from an HDD failure on my main PC).

The little PCB the Hall switch is on is just one I had made up but I've got loads of them as it's actually a panelised design (6 per board) and the minimum order was 10 boards - so 10 panelised boards = 60 finished boards for £10 (delivered) by using an HK/China PCB fabrication house....

Interesting stuff! Excuse my ignorance, but are you going to be using the sensors for traction control or purely to monitor wheel speeds under different conditions?

Primarily for Traction Control but we have discussed using one or more (probably rear(s)) as a seperate accurate speed indication.

We both have one of Jean's IOx boards (and are both staying with MS2 rather than MS3) so giving us plenty of data inputs depending on how we set them up. If it wasn't obvious from earlier, Graham (Graham T on here) and I are doing pretty much the same with pretty much the same boards and parts which always helps with development if someone else can confirm results and vice versa.

The last bits (electronic bits) to finish and instal are here,

The one on the left is for the EGT thermocouples. Originally I used the TechEdge wideband controllers, they have a few little extra data inputs thrown in (inc. EGT) but the logging has to be with their own software (inconvenient) and the circuit is a rather crude high gain Op Amp whereas I've chosen to go for industry standard AD597 chips which are properly cold junction compensated so a lot more accurate.

The other gives us 4 pressure readings, 4 temperature readings (using small open bulb thermistors which, not being encased in anything should be fast response) and connections for the additional Mass Air Flow meter (MAF) - discussed in another thread last year - all bundled into a single cable back to the IOx.

The plan, as mentioned last year, is to measure pressure/temperature at the 5 key points in the system (the 5th location is already measured by the MS2) and, along with a known mass air flow, calculate the actual BSFC (and a few other things) of the engine.
So once these bits are finished, I'll probably be looking to take Robert up on his kind offer (of last year....) to accurately calibrate the MAF *wink*
