My 8 year old sons car lol

Got hold of another car for him as the shell idea seemed to be a pain in the arse buying parts as they're rare now and people ask silly money.

Got him a Neon 998cc yesterday that has been sta in a garage for 13 years!

Here she is -

I didn't come with any keys as they have lost them due to it being 13 years lol

So I changed the door locks and bot lock and also have a new steering column and barrel to fit tomorrow.

It's never been abused and only has 65K on the clock... good base for a project and pretty solid too.

A panels are rotten and door skins too but I am fitting fibreglass front and possibly doors too depending on what cage goes in so possibly no welding to be done.

But the best bit... I checked oil, topped up water and then chucked a battery in it from my van lol

Fired up after a little fettle with carb!

My lads loves it!

I have arranged for it to go in and have a cage fitted to but will be over Christmas.

I got my son cleaning it today, came up mint.

My mate Matts car my son wants me to copy for him and Matt doesn't mind either..

Started on the old girl and my head's taken a few knocks because of it lol

Was a teenager last time I stripped a mini with an A-series, had V-tec one in my twenties and that was much simpler to work on, loads I can't remember lol

Some pics...

And here's my new BBQ lol

As you can see the front is removed, and uncovered a bit of rust lol

All in not to bad tbh to say it sat for so long...

Panel under windscreen inner and outer needs changing, hinge panels and A-Panels as I knew, may go to Mini fest now see if I can get some cheap panels the weekend and excuse to enjoy a Mini show lol

Bit more today, engines out...

I am getting old though lol I hurt my back yesterday under the mini smashing the pin that holds the gear selector on, stubborn thing, well it has been in 22 years lol

I managed to lift the engine out myself and onto the floor, but that finished my back off for today, so I got a pal round to help me trolley it into the back patio where it'll stay for a while.

Couple of pics...

Though my son may get a bit gutted seeing me chop up the car but he loves it and says he knows it'll be good when done.

Next is to clean off front end a bit then buy new panels and start cutting and fitting...

And still to remove rear sub frame to check it all out.

May be going Mini fest Sunday to collect some panels if at the right price.

Thanks, Kev.

Alrite Carl bud, yeah Matt has got stuck in before I got the car home, he stripped the steering column for me and gave me a new one to put in with new key and has given me loads of advice past couple weeks as been years since I messed with a Mini.

The black box on the grille was a lock yeah, but it was crap as I opened it with my BMW key lol

My sons... do you suggest I give him the 240V grinder and ask him to pull the engine out?

Thanks for the nice first reply to a new member though.

Thanks for the nice reply bud.

The aim is for him to start using it on sprint tracks when he is 12 years old.

Anything nut and bolt related he is having a go at and I am going to get him to rebuild the engine himself also with guidance from me.

He's over the moon with it, really nice bonding with him on it.

Yeah the mouse chewed a few wires too but I'll go over the loom also before finished.

Kev.

Nice to see a father son project. Bit of a change from the usual stuff on here. Looks like the base car was pretty good to start with anyway

Thanks, the shell did look really nice when she was washed and people who saw it thought I was mental for chopping it up, but I am glad I did as nearly every wire nut and bolts has snapped to the touch just because of it being stud for so long.

I have been advised by a pal to soak the rear sub frame bolts for a while in WD40 before trying to remove as these are known for snapping too?

Yup, always snap in the heelboard, can be a right bugger to move sometimes. Gotta get one outta my shell but I can at least get some heat on it now

That's a nice base to start from, its looks pretty complete without too much rust. I quite like that escort van in the background for some reason.

I am currently waiting to collect a new welder from a friend on 13th October so not much happening until then.

I tried on the fibreglass front for size today and seems well, over size where is joins to scuttle so can be trimmed down so will look standard when finished I think.

Couple of pics for ya.
