Can anybody point me at a guide that will help me get my head round the basics? I don't want to jump straight in and cock up my new engine...

I've read:
"Engine management advanced tuning" (9 781932 494426)
"High-Performance fuel injection systems" (9 781932 494907)
Both by Greg Banish.

Good/easy read.

There are quite a few tutorials on web too.

Dazed and Confused....

This is the first of a series of tutorials that go through all more important functions in MS.
Also gives input about basic settings:

No problem.

Why not use msq file from Paul S as a basis?

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.p...id=416587&fr=50

Note by Paul:
"If you use it, then you will need to take 360 degrees out of the injection timing table. I'd added it in to cover a cockup on our cam phase sensor."

I'm not running M.S. It's for an S.C. Typhoon.

I guess it can't hurt to have a look at it though, thanks.

I was planning on using his VE table as a basis together with own injector data.

Isnt there an instruction manual for the system ? Always a good place to start, even if isnt the manly thing to do.

Or is it specific or generic info you're after ?

I'm in the middle of reading the manual. I'm more after an idiots guide to what each of the map tables do and what effect changing settings has etc

Surely the manual for that specific ecu is the best place then ?

One great book IMO is Julian Edgar's 21st Century Perofrmance
However it is no longer in print, so not easy or cheap to get hold of.

It does a better job of explaining things than any Ive read. It doesnt try and get too complex, but is in depth enough at the same time.

Motec have some great tutorial videos for their ecu's If the SC stuff follows fairly standard ecu software, then they would be useful too.

I have bought other books, never found any of them to be that good though.

Most basic one is Dave Walker/Haynes book, although it's largely related to his own Emerald stuff, and really is basic basic stuff.

I tend to agree with Stevie, start with the manual.

Understanding the various tables should then become clearer.

Also, look at the various forums for the more DIY type systems (MS being the obvious one), there is lots of info there just by reading questions/answers without worrying about the specifics of each system, just why people are being told to change some setting.

Also, does the SC kit (I've seen it first hand but never asked John this question) have any kind of "simulator" for you to experiment with setups off the car ???

Either a software or hardware simulator.

With MS, probably because it is right at the DIY end of the market, we use a very simple hardware simulator (JimStim) to test software settings completely off the car.

That is a VERY good way to learn.

Edit - typos

The basics are pretty basic. You want more fuel you increase the injection pulse.

The only other key thing to get right is the acceleration enrichment. I've never had to touch this on the SC, but fiddled endlessly wit the MS with no real joy.

The key to the SC is setting up the sensors and all the inputs and outputs, all this is in the manual or on the end of a phone.

I use rate of change of pressure as the input for accel enrichment with a very short accel time and nearly linearly increasing PW adder with MAPdot
Seems to work really well with my twin injector throttle body setup (MS1 V3)

I find a really good book is Dave Walkers book - Engine Management . It is published by Haynes and is a very good book for tuning. A little dated now, but well worth a read.

Thanks chaps. I'm going to have a few passes of the manual before I change anything. Had a look at the ms extra forum, but I don't have specifics to search for at the moment.

I can give you a ring and talk you through some of the various elements if you want Andy?

I've just read through Performance Fuel Injection Systems for the second time (which is pretty good, a little lack-luster in places though) while on holiday.
